annoying to the extreme.....

I guess it could be just me but.....

starting recently everytime I view a thread there is an ad running at the top of the page....complete with sound no less....and it reruns every twenty seconds or so....(coppertone and disney???)...everytime it starts the screen goes back up to the top of the page.....not worth the trouble to keep scrolling back down every twenty seconds to find the post I was trying to read....does not happen while posting a reply....

I don't experience this anywhere else.....I dunno.....

Strange! I don't have video ads up top like that.

Try using an adblocker - I know it does not support this site but ...
I believe some adblockers you can install and only activate on annoying pages.

The ads with sound are troublesome in my mind. I sometimes surf when I can't sleep at night - the ads wake everyone else up. If you are still running WinXP you can avoid a lot of this by not updating your add-ons like Adobe Flash in your browser.

Are you sure you are signed in. Visitors get to view the ads.

Can you close it? Maybe it would replace it with another that isn't animated?

FWIW, I'm not experiencing anything like that either...although there are ads that have a little arrow in the corner, that I assume will play if I were to click the arrow (but I never do - at least not intentionally).

Sorry - it does sound annoying!!

Download "adblock plus"

I can't stand those ads either, an "IT" guy told me about adblockplus a few years back, now I can't do without it.
Blessings,
Bons

Keeping in mind that ads support this site and without them, there would be no site.

Good point Glenn.
I use Ad Blockers for all sites.
If people don't need Ad Blockers don't use them if you only visit a few sites.
Sometimes I find my Ad Blocker prevents me from viewing videos whose originals reside on another 3rd party server (like here).

At times the same thing happens to me. I too am ok with the ads because they do support the site, but they are especially obnoxious on this forum.

But yeah, the forum will put me at a certain post, and I'll scroll up or down and 3-4 times in a row it kicks me back to where I started. You have to wait for the page to fully load, then you can scroll where you want. While the page is still loading, it will sometimes keep forcing you back to where you started.

I had the same issue with ads at the top. I am using the browser Firefox. I installed an ad blocker ad-on. That took care of the issue at my end. But if you are going to use one it is good for you to understand that category of software, what it is doing and how it does not always stop tracking and sometimes even increases it behind the scene. Ad Blockers can be designed in such a way that they are huge money makers for the company that creates them. So before you install one do your background research on what it is you are signing up for. Here is an article about it.
https://www.wired.com/2016/03/heres-...g-makes-money/

a good reason for using an ad blocker is the forum loads faster since the ads are not loading before the page fully opens

I too use Firefox and it has become bloated and a memory hog over the years. I was using Ad Block Plus on all my machines until it became painfully slow on my WinXP laptop I use for couch surfing. On that I switched to uBlock Origin and the speed difference was like night and day.

Thanks for the link to the Wired article, I should consider Privacy Badger now.
Time for more research but after reading the article Ad Block Plus on my other computers has got to go.

Yeah it is a catch 22. Fewer ads = less revenue for supporting the site. But without the regulars posting the site would not have something to attract visitors that bring in additional revenues. I prefer to support the site with content.

Sorry Janet.

On Edit: Just read you can disable the whitelist on some of those ad blockers reducing the off site tracking etc.

Exclamation Tracking and Junk files dangerous to drives

Speaking of tracking. I use 3 programs after each Internet and email session. An amazing amount of tracking, security problems, and junk need to be cleaned. Make sure you do a restore point before running any of the cleaners first time.
CCleaner
Glary Utilities
Advanced SystemCare

I use adblocker plus, and rarely get any ads. Try it; you'll like it.

:Franswa I used to get those items all the time but nerd of a wife installed a Ad Blocker and no more in at least 4 years now. I never got them on FGRV but then again I was not around back then, lucky chaps.

I use several kinds of blockers while running Firefox to browse. For sites like this, I first run without any blocking. At the first sign of advertiser abuse/tracking/spying, I turn on all blockers. Cleans things right up. On the other hand, I'm all for the use of non-intrusive ads for revenue purposes. The OP has every right to be annoyed!
