Couldn't log in!

Just a FYI that I am a very very long-time member (user name Myron Leski) but today was forced to jump through many hoops to log in, because the log-in window was now asking for an email (hotmail) address that I no longer have, since I dumped it after gotten hacked.

Previously all I needed to log in was my user name and my old password, 1981burro, but it wouldn't match up. This effectively froze me out.

Finally gave up trying and registered anew, now using my current, good email address.

So after that I tried to send the administrator this message, and got the message back that I couldn't send private messages because I am an (untrusted) new member!

What a bleepin' PAIN!

OK so I done that. I checked off the box requesting all my old account stuff would merge with the new one. Waiting now for that to happen.

It's the weekend, be patient. Don't know how things work over here, but it may require an admin rather than a moderator.

And next we can talk about why the site has not had working secure sockets layer (SSL) for a few weeks now (at least for me).

(without the "S" thats shows the site is secured with SSL)
and my web browsers report that the site is not secure.

This might not seem like a big deal since we don't do online banking or the like on this site, but there are more reasons than just financial security to use SSL on a web site. So I wonder why apparently the site has stopped using SSL recently.

For what it's worth, new accounts can send private messages, but the messages cannot include a hot link (this includes email addresses and phone numbers). The work around is to spell out part of the email address (such as "at" or "dot") or the digits of a phone number (one three five four three nine two). This is because of a clever (?) bunch of bandwidth thieves who register and then post livestream links to sporting events (or music awards programs), a practice that would cripple our servers if we weren't able to stop it.

The login pages here are secure (httpS) but as noted, the rest of the site is not. We store no financial info or other sensitive content here and we long ago changed login pages (where password data is passed) to meet current security standards.

The primary reason for not changing the rest of the site is that we have thousands of links in posts to offsite images and content that are not https. ALL those links would break. As the www updates it will be easier to make this change but for now we would rather retain that content then break it.
