How to post image - url on PC?
How do I determine the URL of an image on my computer that I wish to add to a PM?
Or, how do I add an image to a PM?
Thanks,
John

There is no URL for an image on your computer. If there was, you'd be giving someone direct access to your computer. Nor can you add an image to a PM. The best is either using a free photo storage service like Flickr and provide the URL to the image there, or send the JPG through a standard email.

Not so. I'll send you a PM to show you it can be done.

Gage, I mentioned... not a URL from an image on your computer. I also said "The best is either using a free photo storage service like Flickr and provide the URL to the image there" which is just what you did.
This is what's missing in PMs:

So, gage, did you send an image or did you send a link to an image?

It's a link to an image. Just like when folks link to YouTube, it automatically pulls the image to the forum. So, it's not really posted as most people think. If the image disappears where it's posted at the URL, we lose it here as well.
For instance, this is the link to the picture Doug posted:

Thanks Donna.
How about changing it so an image can be added??
Merry Christmas all,

This is what Donna said. "Nor can you add an image to a PM." And this is the IMG that I posted in the PM I sent to Donna. It doesn't look like a link to me. Looks more like a picture (image). But what do I know? I haven't been on the board as long as Donna.
Note: The above picture is not an attachment.

No Gage, it's not an attached image, it's a URL to here:
If you attach an image, you use the "Manage Attachments"

Now you have my curiosity piqued. So I am going to send Donna D. and gage the same PM. I will click on "insert image" and attempt to include one. Please let me know what you see. Do you see the image in the PM itself? Or do you see just a link to click on, which takes you to the image in my photobucket account?
When I used "insert image" in the PM box, on my screen I see the actual image. I'll be interested to hear what you see at your end.

FiberglassRV provides a view to a linked image. That's the best I can describe it. Yes we do see it. But there are two ways to get the picture. Use Manage Attachments (you upload from your computer... and it's truly attached!), or link to a photo sharing service like Photobucket.

Ok, then I think it comes down to semantics... what does it mean to "add an image." One person's definition may be different from another's. Is "add an image" in this situation more synonymous with "embed an image so it resides in the PM" or with "insert an image so it displays in the PM"? I'm reminded of the following movie quotation (add humor) ....

If you ATTACH an image, it becomes part of the archive of this site.
If you LiNK to an image on a site like Flickr or PhotoBucket, it will vanish if/when the account on Flickr or PhotoBucket is closed (or if the external site to which you link ever goes away - which is frequently the case when folks link to their own site).
Yes, you can LiNK in a PM, but you can't ATTACH in a PM.
Either way, a (posted) photo displays in the short term. It's not part of our archive, however, unless it's ATTACHED.
For private messages, which presumably are not archived, linking is actually the best way to go. (Thus the forum software doesn't allow attaching.)
Clear as mud? Happy New Year, y'all!!

Mary, I would agree with all you say, except for one little detail. The PM feature has a button that says, "attach image" when the mouse hovers over it, doesn't it? (edit: Oops, I remembered wrong, it says "insert image." Mary is spot on.)
Anyway, Perry's original question was simply how to add an image, not how to attach one. I think we sort of got into 'left field' with the answer.

Mike, not sure what you are looking at, maybe attach an image, but there is no 'Attach' button in PM's. You would have to have this button available, and unless you are special, I doubt you do.
And Perry's question was very much addressed, in that you can't attach an imagine in a PM, so the only way to add an image from your computer would be to first put it on a hosting site, then insert the URL of the image in the PM.

I'm looking at the yellow button that has what looks like a mountain on it. When I hover the cursor over it, a little dialog box springs up that says, "insert image." My bad, I remembered wrong, I thought it used the word "attach" but really it's "insert."
As you say, Jim, one can add an image. The way to add an image to a PM is to click the little yellow button that looks like a mountain. This will result in the recipient seeing the image in the PM, even though the image is not resident on the FGRV website.

This whole thing started with Perry wanting to use a URL to attach an image from his computer in a PM
