You can use tags to do that Zach. Not all tags are supported however, mainly basic ones.
For example, you place a bracketed tag and then your text, followed by the bracketed tag with a slash that turns off the feature. You'd type the following, but without the spaces between characters:
[ B ] text you want in bold goes here [ / B ].
Here's the same as above, with no spaces between the brackets and the B characters, so the tags actually function:
text you want in bold goes here
You can do the same with italics. Just replace the B inside the brackets with an I:

Several other tags are supported. Do a little google searching and you'll find quite a list. However, as I mentioned, not all of them work on forums.
