That could be it Jim, I kinda preferred it, but found a few issues with using it. I am used to this version now.

It's this one on the default skin. I can't STAND that new skin... it hurts my eyes.

I do like the look of the old skin better, mostly for the colours. At first I found the new one quite bright, but after giving it a good go, got used to it just fine. Way better functionality too.

New skin is terrible on the eyes; functionality is moot if you can't look at it.

I look at what is open on my other monitor, and flip through things. Most other web pages, spreadsheet and word docs, etc. are all brighter than this page, and I use them daily.

I wonder if the background could be slightly coloured, even like the tones in this quick reply box.

On a side note, I see that the Default Style seems to to fit to the full page width, whereas the FGRV 2.0 one is much narrow. I wonder if there is a setting to make it full screen width.

I don't know what version I'm using, but I just access threads through the "Recent Discussions" panel on the right. If it's in bold, it's unread.
I found looking through the forums requires too many clicks - first unread being one of them. Using "Recent Discussions" takes me to the first unread post automatically.

From the Home Page, I click on "Forums" on the left bar, then on "New Posts" on the top blue banner bar, and it brings 'em all up. It's a more extensive and complete list than the Recent Discussions bar on the right.

I haven't a clue whether this is the Default setting or not!!

But, then you have to click on "First unread" or it opens the first post in the thread, at least that's what I get.
Using "recent discussions" it takes me directly to first unread post in that thread.

If you are using the default there is a blue tint over the boxes and the page, and blue underlines, and the whole thing is an eyesore. FGRV 2.0 is clean. If you go to the bottom left of the page you can select one or the other to compare.

FGRV 2.0 is too bright. Waaaay too much white. I don't see blue underlines unless they're hyperlinks. The old default skin is more like the Escape Forum.
