Kristi and all,
Here's a couple of solutions you might try:
First is
Tinyspell. It displays a white "TS" icon on your taskbar while monitoring everything you type. If you make a mistake, as determined by a surprisingly large dictionary, the icon turns yellow and beeps. Clicking on the icon gives you a list of closest guesses TS makes. Clicking one replaces the mistake or you can add your word to the dictionary. No definitions, only spell check. It's free and works with any program that accepts keyboard input.
If you need definitions, albeit without the automatic monitoring of TS, try
Wordweb. Just highlight the suspect and click the taskbar icon. There it is. Also free for the basic version.
I have both load at startup so I nevur mispell anything.
