Hi,

We too are enjoying your posts. And seconding the recommendation above, a few years back we enjoyed a"desert" experience, dry-camping at Valley of Fire State Park.

In Las Vegas we were happy at the KOA, right beside the Circus Circus Hotel, walking/moving-sidewalk distance from "The Strip" where most of the action takes place. Granted, KOA is basically a landscaped parking lot but it is well-kept and there is a nice pool and other amenities.

If anything has changed since our visit, someone please correct this.

Hey Lex,

I would go to Circus, Circus KOA too. But.....a few months ago I looked at the neighborhood on google earth and there were many buildings that had been demolished near by. I don't know when the google earth picture was taken. So....there could be construction going on next door.

But you aren't going to sleep in LV anyway. It will probably be too hot and too noisy. We will find you asleep perched against a slot machine or on an indoor park bench.

Basically you just want a place to park your rig while you are in Las Vegas, right?

The Valley of Fire is really neat, but I wouldn't want to rough it out there in the heat in June.

By the way, I really liked your commercial camp site at Thousand Lakes. Do you know the campsite number that was?

Somebody recommended a campground outside Las vegas, but I forgot. :-(

But you are right, just want a place as quiet as possible, but close enough.

We are on site 7 on 1000 Lakes. 1,3,5,7,9,11,13 are the same.

Lex,

Just looked at the price of staying at Circus, Circus KOA and I think I would go back to Sams Town and pay half the rate. Sams Town is on Boulder and is in Las Vegas but one needs to take the shuttle from Sams Town Casino (leaves about every 1/2 hour) to get down to the strip.

When we pulled in to Sams Town in Las Vegas the guy looked at our tiny rig and put us in a very quiet, secluded area. Tried to find our campsite number but don't have it. We didn't have to park with all those monster rigs. The place we were located was behind the washroom (clean) and there were only about 5 spaces. It was private and quiet. They probably don't have many small trailers that will fit in that area. Only one other trailer was back there with us.

I doubt you will have picnic table or space for outdoor sitting wherever you stay in Las Vegas. They do want you to be in the Casino, you know.

Circus, Circus KOA would be very, very convenient. Just now some Las Vegas motel rooms cost less!

If you don't have air conditioning in your trailer don't sign up for too many nights. You just might want to get out of town if the heat or noise is bad.

You 're right, Nancy.
The Rodeway Inn: $ 39 / night :-) Incl. airco and breakfast (we didn't like that sweet 'breakfast').

In Jacksonville we got a senior discount and paid $ 33 :-)

We 'll probably book the Rodeway Inn.
They 've got parking space for the rig :-)

You asked on your blog, I believe at Arches NP about some ladies in "costumes". At first I was thinking maybe Mennonite style dresses but on second look, could someone be in period dress (if it were at Capitol Reef, dress of the early Morman settlers but not sure about this idea at Arches). Another possibility (not sure how sound it would be) could be a current dress style of a off shoot Morman sect. I have read of plural marriage sects in the area around AZ & Utah border. No can say, for sure.

Hi Adrian,
We (Nancy & me) searched the internet and found : http://quakerjane.com/spirit.friends...ress-caps.html
So I still think it is Mennonite.

New question.
As first time tourists in this country we like to visit Hollywood.
Can somebody recommend a campground, suitable to visit Hollywood?

My research turned up this:
Link to: Walnut RV Park
It is highly rated by AAA, (but they say it has only 15 RV spaces in their 2006 Campbook) it might be difficult to get reservations.

Their website has a quote that says it all:
"RV Camping in Southern California in a convenient Los Angeles location is almost non existent."

Link to reviews of this campground
This website says it has 112 spaces, (with an incorrectly marked map) and a satellite view of the correct address shows it having more than 15 spaces, next to a Manufactured Home Community.

We have local (Durango) friends who, like Joyce and I, are southern California natives and grew up east of Los Angeles. They spend a week or two every year at either the "East Shore RV Park" at San Dimas or the "Pomona Fairplex KOA".

http://www.campgroundreviews.com/regions/Calif.../San_Dimas.html

http://www.campgroundreviews.com/regions...ia/Pomona.html

They like them both, but after I looked at those parks on RV Park Reviews, I would have questions on either of them. East Shore RV is on a local reservoir (when I was a kid, it was referred to as Puddingstone Lake, now renamed "Bonelli" lake, honoring a deceased county official). They are going to stay there in a week or so. The reviews particularly panned the East Shore restrooms/showers, but my friends, with a giant fifth wheel trailer, said they'd never had to use the public "facilities". Of course in our travel trailer, we usually avoid the "publics" too, unless we are at one spot more than a few days and can't recharge our fresh water tank and dump our holding tanks.

The Pomona Fairplex KOA is adajcent to the big Los Angeles County fairgrounds, so it might be particularly busy if there is a big event going on at the fairgrounds, which occurs frequently. Based on reviews, I think I'd opt for the Fairplex, of the two.

Both campgrounds have tight sites, which is probably true of anything in the metro area. At East Shore, friends prefer the A, B, or C loops, not the E or F, which echoes what others remarked in the reviews.

Either of these campgrounds should have easy access to the I-10 to head through L.A. to the Hollywood area. (You'll hate California freeways, particularly in the big cities, and worse than hate them when you're towing the trailer, sorry! I know, I commuted on them for years.)

Are you next heading to central and northern California when you leave the L.A. area? Local forum folks can give you some advice on avoiding the most congested areas on your route, in particular avoiding a second trip through "downtown" L.A.

Thanks for your log and web site linked to this forum. Follow it daily. Fantastic photos. I'm intrigued by your beautiful panoramas and how you accomplish such professional results while on the road. I'll ask for more details on cameras, etc., later!

Red face

RE: Campgrounds near Hollywood.

We stopped to see this one (none camping) when a friend of ours was going to stay there for a while; which he did before getting a house to live in. It is fairly close to Hollywood and over looks the Pacific. There are also two state parks kind of close but not as close where we stayed in the past. I drove into or through a part of the city of Hollywood many years ago. Almost a slum it seemed to me. Parts are very slummy, parts very up scale. We wanted to be along the Pacific coast.
Malibu RV Park
http://www.maliburv.com/
We stayed at these in past years.
Leo Carrillo State Park The beach also has tide pools which we enjoyed.
http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=616
Point Mugu State Park Sycamore campground is nice as well also a tide pool, not as large as one at Leo Carrillo. http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=630

The Two suggestions given by George (the "East Shore RV Park" at San Dimas or the "Pomona Fairplex KOA" ) came to mind as well.

Here are some neat museums to see in the LA area as well.
Norton Simon Museum, located at 411 W. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena on the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard at the intersection of the Foothill (210) and Ventura (134) freeway, is a great smaller art museum with the most significant collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in Southern California. Reflections of modern life captured by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, who alone is represented by over one hundred works of art, are displayed alongside the vibrant palettes of Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. Complementing these works are Auguste Rodin’s monumental bronze sculptures, which are displayed in the Museum’s front garden. Paintings by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Francisco de Goya mark the beginning of the 19th century and lead to superb examples of mid-century Realism executed by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet. Outstanding paintings by Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard carry us right to the doorstep of 20th-century Modernism. A must see!
http://www.nortonsimon.org/

The Getty Center presents the Getty's collection of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present against a backdrop of dramatic architecture, tranquil gardens, and breathtaking views. Admission to the Getty Center and to all exhibitions is FREE—no tickets or reservations required for general admission. Parking is $10 per car.
The Getty Center is located at 1200 Getty Center Drive in Los Angeles, California, approximately 12 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. It is located near the intersection of the San Diego Freeway (Interstate 405) and the Santa Monica Freeway (Interstate 10). Take the Getty Center Drive exit from the 405 and follow the signs.
Getty Center is in the Hills above Santa Monica between the 101 or Ventura Freeway and Santa Monica.
http://www.getty.edu/visit/hours/index.html
There is so much to see at the Getty Center, one can spend the whole day and not see it all. The buildings and gardens are a must see in themselves. There is so much art to see, it would take a week to see it correctly. A double must see. The Getty Villa is smaller but a must see as well. They are many miles apart.
http://www.getty.edu/visit/

The Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria.
Where to Find Us
17985 Pacific Coast Highway
Pacific Palisades, California 90272
Please note that access to the Getty Villa entrance is only from the northbound right-hand lane of Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Getty Villa is on the way to Malibu on PCH in Pacific Palisades, one mile north of Sunset Boulevard. http://www.getty.edu/visit/hours/index.html
What to See
Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities arranged by themes including Gods and Goddesses, Dionysos and the Theater, and Stories of the Trojan War and Roman-inspired architecture and gardens.
Admission to the Getty Villa and to all exhibitions is FREE. An advance, timed ticket is required for each adult. Each Villa general admission ticket allows you to bring up to three children ages 15 and under with you in one car. (This does not apply to tickets for events, such as lectures and performances.) Parking is $10 per car or motorcycle.
http://www.getty.edu/visit/

Also a neat place in the LA area.
The Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific is another neat aquarium to see.
http://www.aquariumofpacific.org/
The Queen Mary is also in Long Beach, not far from the Aquarium.
http://www.queenmary.com/?page=search

These are much farther north of the LA area on the way to San Francisco maybe 1/2 way, but very neat places to see.
Hearst San Simeon State Historic Monument or Hearst Castle is located on the California Central Coast. Nestled in the hills at San Simeon, the Castle sits halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles and is approximately a five hour drive from either of these metropolitan areas (Approximately 250 miles). From Los Angeles - Take U.S. Highway 101 north to San Luis Obispo, then California Highway 1 north about 39 miles. (approximately 4.5 hours). From San Francisco - Take U.S. 101 south to California Highway 46, then west on 46 to California Highway 1 and north about 13 miles (250 miles total, approximately 5 hours). From Monterey - Take California Highway 1 South (about 93 miles) to Hearst Castle®. Please allow extra time for Highway 1 which is windy and narrow. Or take Highway 68 East to Highway 101 South then Highway 46 West to California Highway 1 North to the Castle, about 130 miles total.
A must see for the art and architecture. The San Simeon State Park is close by for camping as well.
http://www.parks.ca.gov/Default.asp?page_id=591
http://www.hearstcastle.org/
http://www.hearstcastle.org/tours/index.asp

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located in Monterey at the west end of historic Cannery Row, just minutes from Carmel and Pebble Beach. Monterey is approximately 125 miles south of San Francisco and 360 miles north of Los Angeles. Look for the Monterey Bay Aquarium exit sign. Follow the brown Monterey Bay Aquarium directional signs to Del Monte Ave. On Del Monte, stay in the right two lanes past Fisherman's Wharf then through the tunnel to Foam St. Continue to follow the brown directional signs to Cannery Row parking and the Aquarium. The Aquarium is a unique place, a great place to see. Another must see. http://www.mbayaq.org/
The 17 Mile Drive to Carmel and Pebble Beach is a neat scenic drive as well. One of the most famous stretches of road in the country, this magnificent drive through Pebble Beach tours the dramatic Pacific coastline, offering spectacular views of native wildlife, colorful wildflowers, fabulous homes, world-class golf courses, and the famous Lone Cypress Tree. http://www.pebblebeach.com/page.asp?...=_17_Mile_Home
The Point Piños Lighthouse is located on the northern most tip of the Monterey Peninsula. The stone lighthouse was built 1855 on the point of land that marks the entrance to Monterey Bay. The building, lenses and prisms of the light are all original and the lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the west coast. Open Thurs. - Sun. 1pm - 4pm. http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/calightho.../lh_ptpinos.htm
There are some neat bike paths in the area as well. http://www.mtycounty.com/pgs-parks/bike-path.html

I love your photo of the Grand Canyon N.P. Ranger in her best pontifical stance with that little squirrel trying his best to emulate her posture. They both obviously have had years of practice.

And I think you'll find many of us who agree Heinekens is better than a Bud. (Or Coors or any other mass-bottled U.S. beer.) But while you're traveling, try a six-pack of some of the local craft brews, which are often only available in limited areas. They won't disappoint you---unless, perhaps, you pick up one with infused raspberries or some other non-traditional junk. There will be a number of good micro brews while you're going through California---go into a liquor store---not grocery store---and ask for their recommendation. Of course when you get to central and northern California, you'll want to spice it up a bit with samples from their great large and small wineries.

Everyone: check out and follow Lex and Rita's website log! It's becoming a fantastic photo slice of America, IMNSHO, and should not be missed! The link is at the bottom of Lex's posts.

Thanks for the replies on my Hollywood question.
Stateparks are most of the time fully booked, so I think they are no option for us.

Could Acton / Los Angeles North KOA suitable for our purpose too?

I believe Los Angles / Pomona / Fairplex KOA might be more convenient to get to Hollywood, but Acton / Los Angeles North KOA might be a nicer campground experience. Decisions, decisions... I haven't used either one... But I do use the KOA system and have one of their discount cards. I've only stayed in one disappointing KOA (Benson, AZ) but their standards are usually high.

I have been to Canyon RV Park on Highway 91 in Orange County (Southeast of Los Angeles) which I could recommend. It is very convenient, and a pleasant spot along the river is preferable. Try to avoid a spot alongside the freeway concrete barrier wall. It is about equally distant to the Southeast that Acton/LA north KOA is to the Northeast.

Thanks, Frederick.

The reason why I am asking, is that I planned a route via Death Valley.
But I am in doubt. Is Death Valley worth the detour?
Or is it preferable to go to Palm Springs and then Pomona (as my original routebook suggests)?

After May first I avoid Death Valley and Palm Springs - way too HOT.

Death Valley is really worth the trip in February. I found Scotty's Castle very interesting. Palm Springs is also a winter get-a-way. If you decide to go to Palm Springs, you might try Lake Cahuilla just out side of Palm Springs. http://www.palmspringsrvparks.com/lakecahuilla.html

For Hollywood and LA visiting I would stay at Golden Shore RV Park in Long Beach http://www.goldenshorerv.com/ I have stayed there and it is nice. It is close to the Queen Mary, Getty Museum, Southwest Indian Museum, Universal Studios, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and Hollywood are all within an hour or less drive. Remember, LA is 'combat' driving - just big freeways and lots of lanes. It is NOT for the faint of heart.

I hope this helps.
