Advice on Camping from N. Georgia to Charleston, and Northward

[Posted last month on the Escape Forum. I know cross-posting is frowned upon, but we're just broadening our quest for more advice here.]

Next week, after picking up our NTU Escape 21 in Kentucky, we're heading to Huntsville, Alabama (to check out the Space Museum) and thence to a campsite in the DeSoto Falls Recreation area in North Georgia, for the Bear on the Square music festival in Dahlonega. On the way we'll stop in the railfan site of Dalton, Georgia.

From there we plan to head to Charleston, South Carolina, where we'll play tourist, and then up the coast to Powhatan, Virginia, were daughter and family live.

We're wondering where we should be stopping, and what to see (and photograph) on the way across SC, and, thence as we proceed northwards to Virgina. Advice on what to see and do in Charleston would be welcome, too. Never been there!

Bonus points for more railfan sites!

Not too far N of Charleston on US 17 is Huntington Beach State Park, one of my favorite campgrounds. (I prefer the North campground.) Huge beach with convenient access, and Brookgreen Gardens (gardens, sculpture, animals) across the highway. Nearby Murrells Inlet has a wonderful seafood market, and there are lots of good restaurants nearby.

Anne is right about Huntington Beach SP, Brookgreen Gardens, and Murrells Inlet. We've been there several times. We liked Magnolia Springs SP in Georgia. Spent a few winters on Jekyll Island GA. Charleston wasn't as great as Savannah in regard to the tours, but the Confederate Sub Hunley is there, along with Fort Sumter and a aircraft carrier whose name I can't remember is open to tour. James Island County Park campground is nice, and the Angel Oak is near, and Folly Beach.
