Anacortes, WA - Seeking RV Campground

We are going to Anacortes, WA on August 20th to go on a whale-watching tour. We want to know of a good RV campground at which to stay. Could you tell us of one? It's quite confusing to sort out online. Thank you.

There are many RV parks near Anacortes....state parks and private. You might find that you've waited too long to get a reservation. Whidbey Island has many campgrounds near Anacortes. Deception Pass State Park....Fort Casey....North Whidbey Island RV are just a few. Reservations will be required at this time of year. Beautiful area.....good luck.

They have been closing campgrounds, that and banning over nights at many locations is causing problems.
He is on highway 12, one of my favorites.

Yeah, it's tough when you have to change plans so often and only thought of this two weeks ahead of time. We were lucky, though to snag campsites in the North Cascades National Park August 29-26.

As to the ferry, we may need to drive from the campground, find a PARKING SPACE for the RV for the day, take the ferry and then drive to return the RV in Everett.

I/we appreciate you help. G

There are several spots relatively close or in Anacortes that may or mY not be available. One is the Swinomish Casino along SR20. There is also another RV park along SR20 between the Whidbey Island turn and downtown. Washington Park is city owned and pretty close to the marinas and the ferry terminal. Good luck.

Hi Kenny,
I liked your video even though the message is an eye-opener to me as a Californian who has not camped recently and usually avoids summertime. I had no idea camping prospects are so bad in Washington! Weekends have traditionally been bad everywhere.

Pre-Covid, we belonged to a club called Harvest Host, in which the "camping hosts" provide an over night parking spot for free at their winery, farm or special interest site. We always loved camping with them because there were no or few other campers and they were great hosts with interesting sites. Campers were kindly asked to purchase something from the host to which we happily complied. Through the grapevine, I'm finding even their vacancies may fill up fast.

Perhaps we'll be able to park the RV while we tour on the ferry or get a hotel/motel overnight where we can park. Remember when camping and traveling wasn't so difficult? SIGH

Thank you, Kenny. I'll be looking at other videos of yours. Hopefully some will be more uplifting. I know they'll all be entertaining!

Try Washington Park, we snagged a spot for 22-27 last week. Even if all sites are reserved they have quite a few nonreservable sites.

Deception Pass SP for the WIN. If you are just taking the ferry for the day, I'd extend you campsite, leave the trailer there, and drive your tow vehicle to the ferry.

I'm having a hard time understanding your response and I see all spots are reserved at the campground at Deception Pass for August 26-27. Are you suggesting that we park the RV in the day use area, drive our car to the ferry, return to the Deception Pass campground and continue on our way? Thank you.

No. If you could get a site, you leave your trailer on the site. Since you can’t get a site, it doesn’t matter. I’d call and check on parking with your trailer at the ferry terminal.

The ferry does have parking for RVS and as it turns out, there IS availability at both campgrounds on August 25th. So we could cut our Cascades trip short by one day! Now we need to find out if any public ferries or private boats take a well-behaved Labrador dog. I found some websites that cater to helping dog owners travel with their dog including a public ferry from Anacortes to Friday Island where there is a lavender farm. Methinks we will be able to cobble together a plan.
Thanks so much to everyone for your responses and ideas! I could not have done this so easily without your input! Keep any ideas coming!

There are several web sites that review campgrounds. I always check before making reservations. One is a sponsor of our Fiberglass RV site. https://campgrounds.rvlife.com/regio...gton/anacortes I usually check other reviewing web sites before picking a campground.

We'll only be staying overnight so just a parking lot would be fine. The good news is that I found two campgrounds!

Dogs are no problem on the Washington State Ferries. They are not allowed in the passenger cabin but are OK on the car deck and, I think, the outside passenger decks.

If you're looking to book a whale watching boat, that would be up to the operator.

Good News!
We made a one night camping reservation near the Anacortes Ferry and purchased tickets for the ferry. The Island of San Juan has a "Jolly Trolley" which goes all around the (one square mile) island with stops at all the tourist spots every hour. We decided not to take a whale-watching trip as most do not take dogs and, let's face it, it's a long time for we, humans to spend on a boat. We're taking our chances on spotting Orcas on our way back and forth on the ferry or from land. I'm excited to see two of my favorite sights on the island, alpacas and lavender fields! Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed at those sites but because there are three of us, we'll be able to take turns with the dog outside those venues. Otherwise, much of the San Juan Island is open to dogs including several restaurants.

I've always said, "Half the fun of traveling is in the planning!". Well it can take a lot of time and a lot of work but the payoff is an enjoyable vacation!

gilda, next year consider a whale watching tour that leaves from Port Townsend. Lots of state park camping as well as RV parks. Tons of local sightseeing and beach walks too. In fact there is an RV park at a marina right by the beach at the north end of town. There are doggy day cares in town. But another option is a website for pet sitters. Many times they will let you bring a dog to their own house for a day or two.
Port Townsend is pretty much dog friendly with outdoor seating options at many cafes.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the great suggestions! As it turned out we had to delay our trip for a month. We are able to keep all the plans we had in place. The one difference in that we are renting a camper from a private individual through Outdoorsy.com. The commercial company we had originally gone with is charging $100 more per night than the price we had originally signed up for. (No thank you.)

Thanks, too, for the suggestion to go on a whale watching trip. My husband is not a fan of long boat rides, we could not have taken the dog AND it would have made for a long day. My husband and I have been on whale watching boat rides in our younger years at many places, including a fabulous one through the San Juan Islands. We are hoping that we will have the good fortune to see some whales from the ferry rides to and fro. If not, our son can go back with friends from Seattle or any place they choose, to go on a whale-watching ride!

We can't wait to go on this trip to the PNW to be with our son, to do some camping and to explore San Juan Island with "the dog". Of course, we miss our SCAMP but we won't miss the long drive from San Francisco to Seattle! Our last trip to Seattle meant we had the unfortunate luck to have to replace all 7 tires! We had two blowout incidents, through no fault of our own. One involved the trailer where we decided to replace all three tires and the other was with the car (all-wheel drive) where we decided to replace all 4 tires because our current tire brand had been discontinued all over the U.S.A. (pre-Covid).

We're proving to ourselves that we can still have memorable camping trips without the fiberglass RV. We will never forget the beautiful memories we had with it, though.

Ft Worden beach campground is fantastic for dogs in Pt Townsend.....you need reservation well in advance. Ths Scotish ale at the Pt Townsend brewery is also very good.

If you cruise down HWY 101......stop by the Northwest Carriage Museum in Raymond Wa......beautiful drive down the coast......the museum has one of the finest collections in the country......considered a "must see" when visiting the PNW......remarkable to have a world class museum in such a small town.
The curator and his wife are wonderful folks......if you call a few days in advance.....he'd probably give you a personal tour. His name is Jerry.....he loves sharing the collection. l
