CA - Salinas, Steinbeck's TT

For those who may pass through or near Salinas, CA. You can visit the John Steinbeck Museum where you can view the travel trailer he used when writing the book "Travels With Charlie".
A very apt Steinbeck quote that I think many on this site can appreciate:

“When we get these thruways across the whole country… it will be possible to drive from New York to California without seeing a single thing.”

The quote that I like is "A projected journey spawns advisers in schools" . I was wondering if his truck and camper still existed, I was afraid they had long ago gone to a junkyard.

The layout hasn't changed much over the years. And there are still people not seeing anything during their travels. I'm NOT one of them

Actually it was custom built truck camper. Here is a link that has an outside pic of it about 1/2 way down the article.

and here is the pic itself:

Somehow I had got the idea his truck was an International, but I see it was actually a GMC. Early on Steinbeck admits to taking too much stuff with him, as some of us probably do [me included]. And to look like " a normal traveler on a hunting trip" he takes two rifles and a shotgun. Would we look normal doing that today! Now the claim is that some of the book is fiction, but still a good read anyway. This is probably where William Moon got the idea for his book "Blue Highways".

I liked the part where he hung a bucket of water and clothes from a rope so they would wash while he drove.

It amazes me that someone could have such a nice RV and still write with such pessimism. Steinbeck should have been a much happier guy.
