Camping between VT and CO in March

I am planning a 4-week trip from Vermont to Colorado and then to Arizona to see the desert next spring. Mid-March, when we want to start, is still winter in most of the Northeast and Midwest, so we cannot simply wing it like we did last September and pull in at camps and state parks that just happen to be along the way. We need to spend the first night around Cleveland, OH the second around Des Moines, IA. I know that most Walmart stores allow overnighting, and some truck stops along the interstate also have RV spots. Can anybody suggest an easy way to find what campsites or other camper accommodations are available along I90 and I80?
Thanks in advance.

When we leave home in upstate NY in late November to head south, and return in early March, we want to know what campgrounds are open and have electric hookups so we will have heat. For reference we have Woodall's campground books, Good Sams RV Travel Guide, and the one from KOA. We'll try to plan how far we will get each day and make a list of places we can stay along our route. Around 3 or 4 in the afternoon we will call the campground we are planning to stay at for the night to verify that they are open and have a site. Have only done a Walmart and a truck stop one time when it was late and no campground was near.

There are a lot of KOA's that remain open year round.
