Camping in eastern tennessee

Hello,

Other than the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area, are there any recommendations on campgrounds east of Knoxville in TN towards/near NC state line? (fine if it's just inside NC as well)

Bonus points for good lake/river/pond fishing experience onsite at campground or nearby (river-side campground sites would be great!!), AND quiet small towns in the general area that are fun to explore and/or grab a good non-franchise burger.

Thanks!

Had fun there

Davey Crockett BIRTHPLACE state park in east TN. Fills the parameters listed. There are two Davey Crocketts in TN.

TVA Campground

Douglas Tailwater is a TVA campground. A few miles off of I-40. We have used it for an overnighter.

Look at Ocoee TN East of Cleveland TN.

White Water rafting, camping, hiking, Mountain biking and far less people than PF.

Lot's of Federal and State Parks in the area.

I live in the mountains of NC, close to the TN border. My LAST choice for camping in the area is Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Its a tourist trap in the mountains. Traffic is horrible, endless traffic lights. If you want wax museum, fudge shops, and similar. No thanks!

Plenty of good State Park camping.

Several campgrounds in Waynesville/Maggie Valley area of NC off of exit 20 on I-40. Just off of I-40 is Creekwood Farm CG and Pride Campground. Center of town in Maggie Valley is Stone Bridge CG. Have stayed at all three. Enjoyed each of them.

Roan Mountain State Park in Roan Mountain Tennessee (near Johnson City and on the North Carolina line) is about my favorite. It's twenty minutes from home, and we camp there a lot. Very rural and beautiful area.

There are also some great campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway just a little bit into North Carolina. Linville Falls and Julian Price parks near Roan Mountain and Mt. Pisgah near Asheville come to mind.

Cades Cove and Elkmont are kind of out of the way and beautiful.

They definitely are. Smokemont is another in that general vicinity. But they're really poplular, so book well ahead of time!

Triple Creek campground

Triple Creek Campground is a cute small campground with sites on the water. It is close to Gatlinburg area, so expect some touristy stuff too.
Roan mountain is our favorite though.
