Hey there folks, my wife & I are planning a trip from Oshawa to Norfolk, VA then to Henderson, NC then Cross Winds Family Campground & finally to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
My question is has anyone stay at a camping world parking lot for the night? I'm just wondering if there are any rules....calling before arrival ect?? Also did u feel safe??

Don't know this for sure, but heard Camping World only allows overnight stay if you are there for service or repair. Better ask first. We only did one night at a Walmart, asked manager first, didn't care for it. Did one night at a truck stop, better than Walmart but truck noise and campers were jammed into a small area, but only because of onsite construction. Email from Cracker Barrel said overnight parking not allowed but others have done it so guess it's OK.

Paul - I was born and raised in Henderson, NC and managed to get all of 17 miles away for retirement. I still have family there and we drive over ever so often. Small world! Are you camping somewhere there?

Where are you staying in Norfolk? First Landing State Park (Virginia Beach) is located on the Chesapeake Bay, and has hookups.

There are many places to spend a night, we've stayed overnight in numerous rest areas, a few truck stops, a few Wal-Mart parking lots, a casino parking lot. We always ask at truck stops, Wal-Mart, and casinos. All these places are open all night, so rest rooms are available 24 hours a day.

We stayed at a camping world in Minnesota and they just said it was first come basis for electric plug in. I would call the store first just to see if thet have rules. We also stay at cabellas and have felt safe at both places.

Lot of the McDonald's are staying open 24 hours, now. Has anyone ever dry camped at McDonald's?
Thanks,

Nope, but I lived 1/2 a block away from one at one time. The squawking of the voice on the drive through speaker will surely drive you away.

Not all Walmarts, Camping Worlds etc. are in districts that the laws allow overnight camping. You are always best to ask.

I recently went x-country and stayed at a few Wal-Marts and truck stops along the way. I would pull into WM, and look for an area where RV's were gathered. Then I knew it was ok to park there. If there were no other RV's I moved on. There were some very questionable truck stops along the way which I did not stay at. But, then there were some very nice ones. One Love's had an RV dump and free air for tires. At one WM, there were a couple of cars among 5 or 6 RVs. Wasn't sure what the story was, so I took a picture of the cars and their license plate. Turns out I was over cautious. It was two people who parked their and went out in another car with friends. But, ya never know. Better safe than sorry.
For those who do not travel with firearms or any other form of protection...a fire extinguisher is a great weapon. You can arm it, squirt, then hit the person with it.

i highly recommend the timberlane campground. it is in new jersey, right across the river from
downtown philly. it is excellent. took less than 15 minutes to get downtown.
as to overnighting at camping world......never yet have found one that actually allowed it.

Just have to look at the camping world website....it tells you there if it's available
We stayed at one in Michigan.
We are going to stay at one in NJ on our way to Virginia Beach then to NC.
I emailed them & they are fine with it.

When stopping at a WalMart always as permission at the customer service desk, it's the accepted protocol among Wal-Mart campers.
If there are no RV's present, ask because they might want you to park in a certain area.
Also, even if there are "No Overnight Parking" signs posted, ask anyway. They are sometimes posted to make it easier for the manager to get undesirables ejected by the local Constabulary or only enforced if the manager complains.
However, near beaches and popular tourist areas more and more are no longer allowing overnight parking. In SoCal it's almost impossible.
There is a Yahoo Wal-Mart group that maintains a list of Wal-Marts and parking situations.

Walmart
I recently stopped at a walmart in Wisconsin. When I asked at the service desk if they allowed overnight parking the reply was, "I can't tell you yes and I can't tell you no, but you should park on the left side of the lot."
I shared the space with a huge 5th. wheel and a camper van. No problems.

Staying overnight in your RV in a Cracker Barrel, Staples, Cabellas or Walmart parking lot? This seems like people are being cheap. If you can't afford camping fees, how do you afford gas?

Why should I pay camping fees just a few hours sleep?
