Cape Hatteras,NC camping

I notice the KOA in Cape Hatteras, NC is open in the winter. Has anyone ever stayed there or nearby and if so what is your opinion of camping there in January or February? I'm getting cabin fever.

Have stayed at Camp hattaras next door on our way to our annual pilgrimage to the NPS campground in Ocracoke. Hurricane Irene beat them up pretty bad in 2011 and they had just about rebuilt last October when we went by being chased off the island by Sandy. it is a good sized operation with ocean and sound sites(island is narrow there)They just opened up the road from the north and they are still having issues holding the dune North of Rodanthe where the KOA is located. you can get in the back door by ferry which is fun if the road washes out again. I have never camped this time of year but did do some fishing in late Feb early March where we rented a house. It was typically windy cold and wet as we were blown out 3 of the 4 days we had a charter scheduled. With your rig you should be warm enough, the beach combing will be great but there isn't much else to do except bird watching and maybe kite surfing as even the charter boats cant get out to the Gulf stream until they get the channel dredged in Oregon inlet North of Rodanthe. My 2cents.

Thanks Mike, I think we may head a little further to warmer Myrtle Beach, 90 minutes south and 10 degrees warmer.

jim---myrtle beach will definitely be warmer than hatteras, but not hot. we've been there for feb and march for the past number of years and often it's quite cool.
we quite like myrtle beach state park but huntington beach is also nice. there's lots of private campgrounds as well and all will have room. in fact, driving down the main drag will be a little disconcerting at first, seeing motel/hotel rooms advertised for less than what you'll be paying at the state parks!
check out the "deal" offered by the state park for longer stays. generally a good deal.
and if you do decide to go and are a campfire afficionado, i can PM you with a # of a guy to buy a bulk load of firewood from---if you're there for longer than a night, it's a much better price.
