Just what are "chiggers"?

I am a retired Floridian. Standard UoD (uniform of the day) for me are shorts, flip flops and tee shirt and here in Florida I wear the same attire the year around!. I only wear long pants if you die or marry and often still wear shorts at marriages, especially if it's on the beach! I even wear shorts, like many other Floridians (or recent-Floridians) to Sunday religious services. I have never seen a "chigger"! Are you trying to start some misplaced rumor down here in the Sunshine State? Now, we do have a mosquito or two on occasion down here, in some places, but it's only the females of that lot that bite. The males are docile and friendly, much like us happy Floridians!

I've go nothing against shorts (or the Sunshine State), but chiggers were new to me. They produce itchy, red "bites" around your ankles. Just in case you really have never heard of them, here is a link. I found it by doing a Goggle search - key words red bites, ankles, socks...

Jon I'm up in NW Florida a born here resident and I totally agree with you about Chiggers around here they will eat you alive and hang on for a long time.

I've lived in Florida (@35 miles north of Tampa) since 1985 and to the best of my knowledge, have never been bitten by a chigger. Now fire ants, that is a different story. Also been stung by scorpions twice, as well as yellow jackets, wasps, and honey bees.

Chiggers aka Red Bugs live in tall grasses and bushes. They love to get into areas of tight clothing such as socks or around the waist line. We were camping at Suwannee River State park in October and my wife got hit badly after walking the dog in a field. They are worse than Mosquitos because the itch last for weeks.

Here in Central Texas chiggers use to be bad ,then we got the fire ants wala no chiggers and very few ticks. Thats the only good thing about those ants.

PS if you do get into chiggers get clear finger nail polish put a dab on each bite ,it looks sort of weird but it will kill them.

As a Floridian I seem to be less affected by our bugs here than people who visit me. Oftentimes they complain about mosquitoes and I seldom feel them. Its either because I am used to them or its the garlic I eat... I know that Garlic works!

You're on to something John. I married a girl from Tangier Island, VA. I was from Michigan. When we'd visit the island; mosquitos ate me alive and hardly bothered her. We eventually moved back to MI, and the mosquitos ignored me and attacked her. We wondered if it was just our imagination until I found a magazine article in the doctors office that backed up our theory. Neither one of us were into garlic back then. Now we live in IL, and the mosquitos think we both taste delicious.
