Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest camping

We took the UHaul out for the first time this season over Memorial Day weekend. In the past few years we have enjoyed the rustic campgrounds in the Chequamegon National Forest in northern WI. Pine forests, beautiful lakes, and the wild life of which my favorite are the loons.

Cheg-Nicolet is on my hope-to-visit list.....and fairly close to me.

Any advice? Location? things to see? Love northern WI and the UP of MI!!!

I like American Legion Northern Highlands state forest too...reservations can be impossible sometimes.

Well, except the ones I got 11 months ago to get a waterfront site over the 4th. Heehee. I feel lucky 😃🎶

Tonia, we have been to three different campgrounds so far; Lake Three, Mineral Lake, and Beaver Lake last weekend. All three have only 8 to 14 campsites, are close to a neat waterfall, and Copper Falls State Park. If you like hiking, there is a multi-state trail that goes nearby. We enjoy kayaking, and the lakes are great for that. There are quite a few more campgrounds throughout the forest...so many places so little time!

Thanks Diane. I saw there were several camping options. I like a more rustic experience so I thought this place sounded perfect. Love your lake pic!

At American Legion/Northern Highland SF we like the Musky/Crystal CG and have been going there for almost 40 years. What we have discovered beside an impossible reservation system is that you can find sites open on any mid week day. We have watched over the years and the non reservable sites sit vacant from Sunday thru Thursday, meaning if you arrive any of those days you can have the site for two weeks.

Good to know! I've stayed at crystal but not musky. I have reservations at firefly this weekend so maybe I'll drive the other camps to check them out. I've also stayed at Indian mounds....only pit toilets there though.
