Beautiful Cristopher Creek Campground on the Tonto National Forest.
Nice little campground with the creek running through the middle with a water crossing.
It has a charm all it's own and I try to camp here once a season or so.
You can see the album of pictures on my signature.

Its my second favorite campground on the Rim. I usually camp in the first loop and drive into the space next to the host site back there. Nice view of the cliffs from there, and the sound of the water is relaxing.

Good for Tonto! After years of always being second banana to the Lone Ranger, I'm really glad to see that he finally got some recognition. It was really nice of somebody to name a National Forest after him.

As an interesting side note...Tonto in spanish means "dummy". Nice to know that the Lone Ranger thought so highly of his best friend. (lol)

One of my favorites too, good eats in the lodge area as well, good friends in Payson we see, then we push on to Alpine. Thanks for the pics. We like the first loop as you enter as well, a quiet little area. Love the cathedral like feeling of the second main campground.

I'm no spanish Major but had to look up "Tonto" and translated into "English" it came back with the following:

Found in dictionary: Spanish > English.
Tonto:
[b]noun
cretin
idiot
stupid
fool
silly
moron
dummy
dink
dimwit
cabbagehead
dunderhead
numbhead
pinhead
clod-poll
lemon
greaseproof paper
dispensary

[b]adjective
foolish
fool
silly
idiotic
soft
simple-minded
unwise
witless
nonsensical
wall-eyed
loose
calvish
crass
crazed
soppy
spoony
idle-headed
soft-headed

Wow who would have thought..... Hope somebody on here that is fluent in Spanish could verify this as right or wrong..... but then again neither the Lone Ranger or Tonto was Spanish so it could just be a coincidence

Still Tonto national forest is a beautiful place and BIG and i need to get out there more often.....those pictures are beautiful.

Red face

A Park Ranger at Tonto Nat'l Mon't said the Spanish gave them the name because the Tonto Apache Tribe would not speak Spanish. But I now read: Tontos (Spanish: 'fools,' so called on account of their supposed imbecility; the designation, however, is a misnomer). http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/trib...pache/tonto.htm

But not for Tonto of the movies: http://www.endeavorcomics.com/largent/ranger/faq.html

So don't be a tonto and call Tonto a dummy!
