Fall Lake Ely Mn

We just returned from four days on the edge of the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota. The campground is a long time favorite of ours since each site is extremely private and wooded. Typically you have your camper pad and then a large upper or lower pad (depending on the site) with a picnic table and fire pit. After a day of hiking to nearby waterfalls and kayaking the many bays and inlets we close out each day sitting around the campfire listening to the loons call out on the lake.

Sid, I really liked your pics. Looks like a great time. I canoe camped in the BWCA years ago. I went with some of my buddies, portaging from lake to lake. It was a lot of work, but worth it! I often thought I'd like to take my wife up there, but rent a cabin and explore the lakes around the cabin. Easier portages when you're not hauling all your gear around. It recently occurred to me that it would be even better in our soon to be camper. Duh!! We also have a 16' Kevlar Mad River Explorer canoe.

Did your campground have electric and water hook-ups? I haven't started looking for campgrounds up there. Are there many? I assume your's was on Fall Lake? How were the bugs this time of year? So many questions.

Tom, depending on your site the mosquito's can be thick or not noticeable at all. We were near the boggy section and we only had two occasions where they were really bad. Off Active seemed effective at repelling them and wasn't greasy feeling. All in all they didn't hinder our adventures too bad.
Water fill up hose is located at the ranger station when you first pull in. After that I just added as needed with water jugs filled outside the bathrooms. The bathrooms all have showers at no added cost. Even though the entire facility is new and modern dump stations are not available on site. Sites with electricity are $22 a night and without $18. The cost is half that if you have a National Park Golden pass.
If you search on "Fall Lake Campground Ely Mn" you will find one hit from Campgrounds and Camping Reservations - ReserveAmerica hit that and you can pull up an interactive map and other details.

Thanks for all the info Sid. I'm going to bookmark this thread for a future trip. I used the Reserve America site to book the Scamp Camp for 2015, so I'm familiar with that. I will look into the Natl. Park Golden Pass. Someone in a park down in FL mentioned that, but I couldn't recall the name. Big help. Thx!

The Boundary Waters area is a true wilderness experience. When you brought up the loon calls, I had to smile. After my trip, I found and bought a CD with loon calls. I really liked it until the middle of the second track when somebody started reading poetry. It ruined the whole mood. There are some sounds that can't be improved.

I appreciate your taking time to answer my questions. One more please. Is Fall Lake paddle only, or are motors allowed? I know some of the outer lakes allow motors. Also I failed to mention how roomy your trailer looks. I like your idea of hanging your bucket list on the walls. Nice indeed!

They have changed it to "Senior Pass" fairly recently. Here is a link to the various federal passes: U.S. National Park ServiceAmerica the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass Series

10 bucks, lifetime pass. It is in that link Mike posted, and I know that's the deal, as we were at a national park recently. That's when I found out.

Frank, The cost is $20 for seniors 62 years of age or older. $10 for the pass and $ 10 for processing the application.
I just printed out the application to mail off and get my senior pass.

A correction of sort, if you get the pass in person at a federal recreation site there is no processing fee and the cost is only $10!
Thanks

Tom, Fall Lake is just on the edge of the BWCA and as such it does allow motors on the boats but it is the last chain of lakes that do. Portage off one end and you feel as if you are instantly sent back in time 150 years.
Thanks for the kind words about the trailer. It suits us to a T.
