Herkimer Diamonds at Crystal Grove, NY

On our recent bring-the-trailer-home-the-long-way we went rockhounding for Herkimer "Diamonds"... beautiful doubly-terminated quartz crystals. What's great about this campground is that it's around 300 feet from the diggings!

They had everything from a spot-on-the-ground to pull-thrus with power and water. They even have a couple of camping cabins. This place is CLEAN! The folks that run it do a great job of keeping it spic'n'span. A site with NO hookups is $25/night. With AC and water it's $32. They've got showers and a dump facility.

Rock collecting is $10 per person per day... a bargain since you get to keep EVERYTHING you collect. Mind you... this is HARD ROCK! I used every one of my tools from the 10 pound sledge hammer to my small rock pick. If you stick to it, you'll find some real beauties... like this one:

Herkimer is one of the "classic" rock collecting sites in the world. We had a blast there and came home with a lot of wonderful specimens.

For information, contact the campground at:

I've never seen that...but I just looked at the "trailer" for it. Six bucks or so at WalMart! I think I may have to get a copy.

Oh... and if we don't come home with at least 300 pounds of rock we're just not doing our job!

Beautiful trailer. That's a Scamp? What is your tow vehicle? I showed it to my husband and he is sure you are driving an 8 cylinder something!

We did some rock hounding in North Dakota before we came home "for good" along the Little Missouri and Yellowstone. My husband got me a heavy duty rock polisher for Christmas. A saw would be nice but maybe later.

Yup... '98 Scamp. The TV is a V6 2008 Toyota Rav4.
