There are plenty of snakes in the park and the area, but like most critters, they don't want to be bothered with humans. TV likes to dramatize for viewership. Don't let that stop you!

Sorry friend, I don't know a Ruth. I work under the maintenance division, so most employees I know are under maintenance or law enforcement.

They had a ranger program at the amphitheater the night we stayed given by Barbara Hedges that discussed some of the misconceptions about the Everglades fostered by TV and the movies. Great program, and the snakes (or lack of snake sitings) were mentioned.
