Huntington Beach State Park

Just thought I'd get a jump on this and get the topic heading listed.

My wife and son and I leave on Thursday for five days at Huntington Beach State Park in South Carolina. I've been to that park many times, but this will be the first time camping there. It's our favorite SC coastal park, in that the beach is pristine and it has the finest example of a healthy maritime forest that I've seen along the SC coast. There's lots of wildlife and the dunes are in good shape.

The campsite that we reserved has water and electric hookups. I'll post a full report when we get back.

Glad to have you down here Bob, you're absolutely right about Huntington Beach being one of the finest examples of healthy maritime forests, I've always said that Huntington Beach is one of the best kept secrets of the Grand Strand. It's probably because everyone gets so absorbed looking at the beautiful horse sculpture across the road at Brookgreen Gardens, that they simply miss the entrance to the park.

And you've picked a beautiful weekend to come to the beach. Temps in the mid80's down to the low 70's, Low humidity, plenty of sun & gentle breezes. This is the "hidden season" here, the families with kids are now about all gone home, leaving the empty nesters and early retiree's a beach free to enjoy.

If you're heading home via HWY 501 out of Myrtle Beach, please blow your horn real loud 'bout the time you're crossing the Waccamaw River coming into Conway SC. You'll be less than a half mile from me, I'll hear you n' know it's you.

let's see, the sewage treatment pipe outlet is not too far from there(ca). but i understand it keeps the water warm. ;^)

We had a great time at Huntington Beach State Park in South Carolina (not the one in California).

Many of the campsites are open, so if you don't like direct sunlight, you'd better look for a site on the back loop (sites 100-130 or so). Lots of shade back there, which is where we wre. Also, no fire grills. Some sites have fire pits, but some don't even have those. We had to run to a shop and buy a little tabletop grill to cook our burgers and steaks and chicken and such.

The bathhouses are very clean. They actually go through them about every two hours and scour them and hose them down with cleanser. Showers are nice and hot. (Yes, we have a shower in our Casita, but we use the bathhouses whenever possible.)

Tons of wildlife at Huntington Beach. It's an unspoiled area, so there are many, many species of birds there that you won't see elsewhere. Lots of alligators. We even saw a mink on the jettie at the far end of the park. He just hopped around on the rocks, but as soon as I got ready to take his photo, he ducked under where I couldn't get a shot. Strangely, we never saw a raccoon, although one did come in a bite a hole in our garbage bag which we'd left unattended for a few minutes. But we never saw him.

As I said, there's lots of wildlife in and around the park. We took a kayak trip on the Blackwater River and into the Big Dam Swamp (yes, that's its name). Carole and I discovered that kayaks are a lot easier to paddle and steer than are canoes. So we're going to sell our canoe and buy a couple of kayaks as soon as we can.

We had a great time at Huntington Beach State Park, and I recommend it highly. If you like getting away from the crowds, this is the SC beach park for you.
