KOA and Good Sam recommended camp grounds.
Get a KOA book and a Good Sam Membership and go from there.
Your Good Sam, AAA cards will get you a 10% discount in most of parks.
With the price of gas going up I think there will be openings in most camp grounds.
We usually call a couple of hours ahead to the camp ground to make the reservation because we never know just when we will want to stop for the night. That way, we are never in a hurry or forced to be in a certain place at a certain time.

In Canada, at least in the parks, there are many choices of campgrounds. They are usually either federal or provincial government owned and run and most are awesome. Check out Kananaskis, Yoho, Revelstoke etc as well. You might, depending on when you are coming, want to reserve your spots. The mountains can get very busy and then you'll be left with overflow camping. Although, these spots are usually nicer than the average privately owned campgrounds.
Campgrounds and RV Parks in the Rockies, Alberta.
This is a site for campgrounds in the Albertan Rockies, but if you scroll around a wee bit you'll find all kinds of info for BC as well.
Hope you enjoy your time up here....

Seems to me you have some options to hit a gathering on your return trip.

If you return north consider the Duluth gathering in Sept. Then go up the shore after that to see fall colors. Normally Oct first is the end of our color season.

There are other gatherings south of us you could look into. I always pass on September gatherings as I can not think of anyplace I would rather be in September than northern Minnesota.

yes an annual pass is the way to go but you can buy them at the CAA or at any of the park gates. you need to pay a park entrance as well as camping fees.

i think my annual pass was $140 dollars but if you are in the park for a few weeks it is worth it ( my kids use ours too)

with all the parks along the rockies it will pay off

you can buy parks fishing licenses by the day, week or year too

dont miss the hot springs when you are here

the canadian rockies are awesome we just dont tell anyone

A park pass is only good for National Parks and National Historic Places. This is the national park's site. Some of these sites you cannot drive to, but since a trip to Nunavut was not on your list, I'll think you'll be fine. lol

Parks Canada - National Parks List

It doesn't matter when you buy the pass, the price is the same year round, it just makes more sense to buy it as early as possible and use it as much as you can. Here's the price list for the national pass or the Discovery Pass

* Adult $67.70

* Senior $57.90

* Youth $33.30

* Family/Group $136.40

Includes entry to 27 participating national parks and 78 participating national historic sites.

If you go to the west entrance to Yellowstone, I recommend Red Rock RV Campground in Island Park, Idaho. It is a beautiful location and the people are very nice. I do NOT recommend the KOA at West Yellowstone even though it is closer to the park entrance. About the west entrance to Yellowstone, the bison are a problem. They create 1 1/2 to 2 hour traffic jams going into the park.

Thanks to all fiberglass people!
We have researched your sugguestions and done some on our own.
Here is tenative plan:
about 9 or 10 days each in Whistlers in Jasper, Tunnel Mt in Banff, San Suz Ed in Glacier,Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone and Game Lodge in Black Hills. Side loops to all sights from base camp, hikes etc.
All seem to have pluses and minuses, but hope to work for us.
Thanks again and more thoughts would be appreciated.

finaly living this long is gonna start paying off.
