It was a beautiful sunny day....
The FIRST spot we looked at was gated! How could that be? Why, the last time we were here it was open and -- oh, that was BC (before child) so, um, a good 12 years ago....
The SECOND spot we looked at was CLEARLY marked as a campground on our brand new recreation guide... Oh, that's if you HIKE up this mountain, I guess with a tent in your backpack.
The THIRD spot... ditto.
The FOURTH spot was not a spot at all, it was a cliff!
So we are all hot n tired n aggravated, and grumpily decide to head up the road.
Then, a few minutes north, there is a lovely spot beside some unmarked river or creek, and we pull into it and set up a lovely boondock. Aaagh.
There we watch almost-spent salmon struggling upriver, then we see the finished fish flowing dead downstream, at a much faster rate. Eagles fly by, as do ravens. Ducks swim upstream on the far bank.
The next morning, hubby takes a recon walk up the water and sees the spawning bed is just around the corner, and grizzly tracks are on the mud right nearby. Needless to say, we are very Bear Aware for the rest of the weekend, burning some consumables and keeping any garbage-smelling stuff locked up tight in the truck.
A beautiful harvest moon sparkles on the water at night, kid sees it and says, "I love camping."
On the way home, I look at the map and say, Oh, that was the Kitwanga River.
