Found a neat KOA close to Acadia NP in Maine, right on the Atlantic Ocean

a little pricey but the view I feel is worth it. They have a dog park and $3 breakfast every day. Will report back upon return.

Whoooo! A little expensive? We'd like to go to MDI later in the summer, but not if we can't find a lower rate than that. Would cut into the lobster budget too much, can't have that. Looking forward to hearing about your stay, I think I stayed there a long time ago (30 years or more), been to most of the campgrounds on the island, think it's gonna boil down to where we can find an open spot.

Only one I didn't like was Blackwoods in the NP. More raccoons than people, watched one pull a 5-lb. canned ham up a tree backwards. (it was out of the can)

We went to Bar Harbor in early June a few years back. Good time to go as you are out of season until late June. Crowds were low, but the bugs weren't. Black flies and no see ums abound. Don't leave the door open especially toward evening. Find a lobster pound were you pick and they cook it up for you. Picnic tables and paper plates.

This one is on my "To Camp" list. I drove by it while doing some other camping and things with some buddies in Acadia. It is right on the water and a great looking place. Can't take the puppies in Acadia but there is soooo much to do all around there and that campground is amazing as far as the view. We want to go there so we can plop our kayaks in the water after walking out the camper door! Looking forward to your report

The campground we like and try to stay at when we go up to Bar Harbor is the Bar Harbor Campground. The Bar Harbor Campground I didn't see the price on their website, but when we went up last year, I think it was $37 per night for full hookups. It's a nice, clean campground, right across the road from a lobster shack (I have no idea if its good or not as we are vegetarians). The downside, and its a big one is that they don't take reservations or credit cards. So it's first come, first serve. If you can get to the campground mid-week in the summer, you should be just fine.

There is absolutely no way I'd pay $69 for a site. I don't care how wonderful a site might be or how great the view or that I can afford it, as a matter of principle I would not pay it.

It is like a 5 star restaurant, you need to do it once so you experience some of the finer things in life and then can appreciate the simpler things in reality. Plus my companion can not stop talking about Clayton's lobster dinner and eating it inside the camper. The perfect combination (NTBCW the perfect storm!) I'm sure you have spent $70 for dinner for two, add the tip and you have the first nights cost for meal and room. And the sunrises and sunsets were spectacular.

The two things I miss about camping on the coast of Maine... Lobster and crabs...

We used to go once a summer when I was a kid. Eat the lobster at a roadside stop, they used to have lobster with all the sides and fixins for about $10 (I'm sure it is no longer there) and we used to catch our own crab and clams in the morning and cook em up for lunch.

Sticking up for matters of principle will never make up for what you missed.

I agree with CP, sometimes ya gotta go the extra mile ($$$) to get what you want/deserve. I would not normally even think about going into a KOA, but those views would make it worth the extra $$$, if only for the memories.

I try to average out overnighting costs. Lets see: 1 night at that KOA = 4 nights in a Wal-Mart to make up for it. In a few weeks (minutes even) I will have forgot about the Wal-Marts, but the night(s) in Maine would be forever.
