Mammoth Pools is a long drive, the last of it on a lousy road, and the campground is basically ugly. Really not worth it unless you're pulling a boat--the lake is a mile away. We stayed the afternoon, went to the lake, came back and said "forget this" and went back down the road to Rock Creek where we camped about ten years ago. It's is in a beautiful location, large campsites, some secluded and easy to pull through or back into, good hiking and nice hosts. Don't know why it took me so long to go back except I always have this yearning to try new places!
