Maps for British Columbia, Alberta, Alaska, NWT?

There is a saying that the locals in northern B.C., the Yukon and Alaska use...'Never Pass Gas' and no I'm not talking about flatulence. Talking about gasoline. As other have said gas stations and services just come and go. One bad year in the tourism trade and poof there are gas stations disappearing. Doesn't hurt to carry a 5 gal Jerry can. If you don't need it I'll be you'll find someone who does.

Three little hints...in B.C. you can get free highway/campground maps at the official Tourism Info centres. For their purposes the province is broken up into 6 regions. Detailed campsite info included. As a sidebar I believe that if your trailer is 18 feet o/a length or less then you can use a tent campsite. no power/city water/sewer but usually there's a flush toilet and sinks.. Bigger campsites have showers.

If you need a map overview the province does sell ($3.95) a province wide map with campground locations.
Hint #2 The official Provincial Tourism centres have good wifi.(sometimes after hours!)

Hint #3 In the Yukon we used the old roadside gravel pits for a boondocking. We always park in the middle of the pits. Gives you a 360 degree view of what's wandering around. This is wilderness.There are no garbage cans so you know the drill.

A great road map but because it's based on last years info occasionally out of date. Particularly regarding accomodation and gas stations. Make sure you have a plan B.

I carry 10 gallon of diesel. Ya never know...

We went to Alaska this past summer. About 3 months, 14,000 miles. We had a several year old Milepost that was given to us. Glad I didn't buy it, never used it once. The best maps to be had were the free provincial maps at rest stops and visitor centers in Canada.

If you're carrying extra diesel with you (we had 15 gallons) you will most likely need DEF also. DO NOT count on finding it in bulk like in the US. In Canada it is Expensive. When we got to Alaska it was cheap at Walmart with no state sales tax.

Never once did we have trouble finding a place to pull over for the night. There are tons of pullouts on the side of the road, many with a beautiful view of lakes and glaciers.

And speaking of glaciers, if you plan to visit Valdez and want to boondock, go out to Glacier View Park. It's free and is a cool place to visit. There were fewer than 10 trailers there with us, probably because nobody knows about it.

If you are in the Yukon, the territorial parks are great! We stayed in a couple. No services but well maintained and about $13 a night (a few years ago) Free firewood, pit toilets but clean. As for "don't pass gas" yes to a point but be careful as some of the out of the way gas places are damn expensive, try to gas up in towns if possible. The out of the way gas stations have to run gennies for power and you are paying for it. The cost in town can also vary and the cheaper ones may be in the middle rather than the edges of town. Have a safe trip and don't pet the bears.
