Gorgeous area, but several large forest fires in area right now. You may want to check specific locations before you go.

Last time I went there, I did a side trip to Sandon (rhymes with Bandon!). It was an old mine and remants of civilization are present (some dwellings may still be occupied), including an old railway along the side of the hill - quite an engineering feat.

Beautiful country through the Slocan Valley, but there are a number of severe forest fires in the area right now, with a couple with evacuation alerts/orders in effect. Latest forest fire info at:
http://bcwildfire.ca/hprScripts/WildfireNe...&AllFires=0

On the news this afternoon, reports from Nelson were that it was getting somewhat smoky in the area. Hazard rating is quite high, and power has been out in a few of these communities, with fire taking out a couple of key transmission lines.

Due to the forest fire conditions and the power outages to local towns ...etc.....
We've had to postpone out trek to that area for another month.

Bummer, we were soooo looking forward to that tour.

Thanks to all for responding, we now know where we will spend time camping and enjoying the sights

We'll soon be packing our Boler, heading out of Edmonton, lookin' Southwest for New Denver...with great anticipation

We're almost finished installing the screen door and another modification.
Then early next week load up, to head out on Thursday afternoon
Probably take a while to get there, as we'll be sight seeing and such, along the way.

A few weeks ago we spotted several Bolers heading West together, towards the National Parks - Good on them

We've been through New Denver, Kaslo etc. Nice little towns. A co worker spends every vacation at a campsite at New Denver, the sites are right on Slocan Lake. She loves it there, although we like swimming and the water there (and Kootenay lake) is cccold!!
I like Ainsworth hot springs a lot though, its really neat with a U shaped cave you go into while in the water - very steamy and weird. You come out feeling wonderful, and it's right across the road from Kootenay lake and mountain views.

Ainsworth Hot Springs is the best hot spring in the Rockies (IMHO)

Nothing like Ainsworth. Really nice if you go at the end of your day and watch the sun go down - very relaxing!!
