Newfoundland Rally Teaser

We attended Scouter Dave's NL rally this year, the 1st. There were two rigs. I have offered to individually contact FRV members in NL, NS and NB.

Since this rally is a little difficult to attend due to distance and ferry cost I thought I could give you something to think about.

If you like music this is a great rally. The music portion actually goes for 10 days. This year the rally covered the last four days.

A typical day begins with a physical event, like a hike through Gros Morne or boat tour.... Music events start later in the morning and go to midnight. The longest musical event lasted 3 hours and included a great tapas dinner. The musical events usually highlght 3-5 different groups, different kinds of music, story tellers, comedians.

Most music events are free or a donation. Meals with music go from reasonable $5 for fish cakes, beans and toutons, to $30 for an 8 course tapas meal.

This music festival, Trails, Tales and Tunes was voted Newfoundland's best last year.

The ferry is really the biggest expense for the rally. For our Scamp 16 and tow vehicle the ferry fee was $303. A 10% discount is available for a group of 25 (one can hope).

As well as the festival the rally takes place in Gros Morne, a great national park and a world heritage center. Actually there are 3 world heritage centers with in reasonable driving distance...Red Bay and L'Anse aux Meadows the other two.

This is obviously a teaser. I"ll contact members directly with more details as the year goes on. year

It's in May, or was this year. Here's a link to Scouter Dave's thread about that one:

No word there from Scouter Dave as to whether or not he's going to try again next year, though...

2014 Tales, Trails and Tunes

Francesca and Bec,

The dates for Tales, Trails and Tunes in 2014 are May 16 - 25.

It turns out that Scouter Dave virtually has gone to all if not most of these events. He's a real interesting guy with many friends in the area and while there he usually does a couple of radio shows.

I told him I would help him next year by searching our membership and send out information.

In our driving about NL we saw at least 6 fiberglass rigs. My goal is to let all of the rigs in NL know about the event.

May is a nice time to go to NL. It's before the real beginning ot tourist time, usually people in RVs show in late June, early July. It's cool, like the coast of Oregon, but not really cold.

It's amazing that a town of seven hundred can sponsor an event like this. One of the nice parts of the event is the largest venue is the town hall, sitting maybe 150 (if the fire chief, if there is one, is not around).

It's the kind of event where the Lion's Club can cook enough fish cakes and toutons for the entire audience in an hour or so.

Another aspect, since it's held in Gros Morne, you can take breaks from the day long festivities and visit other features of the park.

As well everyone of the restuarants, has music with dinner. It really is a good event.

Sounds great...

Two questions, though:

Are there cod tongue sandwiches, and if so are they any good?
and
Where IS "Newfoundland", anyway???

Francesca,

Newfoundland is 178 km Northeast of North Sydney, NS by 6 hour ferry. North Sydney is located at the north eastern tip of Nova Scotia. The trip also provides the opportunity to take a spin arounf Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail.

The ferry trip was very smooth, we slept most of the way.

NL is on Newfie time, a 1/2 hour earlier than Atlantic Time.

Cod Tongues were Ok but not as good as Cod filets. I like to try the local food. Right now I miss the very good Newfie breads, certainly better than what we get in NH.

Thanks ......think we'll have to read all of that thread . Seems like enough reason to take an extra trip east dedicated just to NFL and that event !

Newfoundland is on my bucket list. The problem for me is that since this is off season (which I normally really like) many of the places I want to visit will not be open until early to mid June.

By the way, this in in archives.

Thresa,
Once is not enough. We just completed our 5th trip. We have driven most of the roads except the one to Hermitage.

Like Alaska and the Yukon it's pleasantly different.

Norm & Ginny, have you two ever been over the Hartland Bridge in New Brunswick? It's the world's longest covered bridge: Hartland Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's on my list for the Maritimes one of these days!

Newfoundland boondocking

Norm and Ginny, are there many opportunities for boondock camping in Newfoundland? In your travels there have you stayed mostly in organized campgrounds? Thanks for any info you can share. Tess and I won't be there this year but it is on the calendar for next(2015).
