Route between Wisconsin and Toronto

We are planning a leg of a trip between Marshfield, Wisconsin and Toronto, Ontario. We'd like to go through the upper peninsula, but then which way works best? Through Sault Ste. Marie or down through Michigan? Is one border crossing easier than another? We're traveling the end of June. Any ideas for beautiful camping spots would be appreciated.

We took Wisconsin Hwy 77 from Danbury Wisconsin ( traveling East ) to Iron Mountain Mi . Crossed the UP of Michigan to Sault St Marie Michigan then crossed the bridge into Canada Then we drove east across Canada dropping down into Toronto
The route going across Canada only had 2 gas stations and one of them was out of gas . We left Sault St Marie with a full tank of fuel and we were on empty when we got to the first station with fuel.
We loved Toronto but the traffic is just like any big city , not as bad as Dallas or Chicago but still heavy
You can also head north at Superior Wi and take the trip around
the north shore of Lake Superior and then across Canada,to Toronto

Last August, we drove back from Toronto via the States to Calgary. Around May, I posted my initial routes in this site and got a lot of suggestions to avoid Chicago. So the final route we took was 69, then N75 to Mackinaw City, then 28. It was a great trip.

Another route that would be little costlier but much more scenic would be to go through the Sault And on to Manatoulin Island and than take the ferry to Tobermory . From there you would drive down the peninsula to the blue mountains and Lake Huron and by the beautiful town of Collingwood and Sauble Beach and than your on the 400 right into Toronto. This would be an epic trip with lots of great camping on the way.

One of my favorite trips ever was along the North shore of Lake Superior.
Fabulous scenery, lots of waterfalls, a passion of mine, and lovely campgrounds along the shore.

A couple of corrections here. There are certainly many more than two gas stationns between Sault Ste Marie On and Toronto. Just don't expect many in Northern ON to be 24 hour. And its Collingwood and Wasaga Beach not Sauble. We have taken all these routes and especially like the ferry to Tobermory

Our vote is for the beautiful scenery on the North Shore of Lake Superior. we visited the 'Land of the Big Goose' - (Wawa), in 1961; and stayed there for the next 35 years !, before retiring to the Algonquin area, still well 'north' of Toronto.

We have made that trip about three times. Once through the UP, once on the Badger from Manitowoc to Ludington and lastly from Milwaukee to Muskegon on the ferry. The boats, while more expensive, are an interesting way to get from Wisconsin to Michigan.

I guess it would depend on how much time you have. The Mackinac bridge and Port Huron route would be faster. The Port Huron crossing is a major one with many lanes through customs. Traffic could be backed up.

We drove from Toronto to Sault Set Marie in 1960, at night, in the rain, on gravel, as part of a non-stop trip back to Saskatchewan. So have no memory of that area. more recently we drove across at the Sault, then around Lake Superior.
