Route through the mountains in late March

Don't forget that 2 highway across the UP, WI, and MN, can be subject to lots of snow that time of year, as well as flooding if early spring rains are heavy, the Missouri/Red rivers can be flooding in the Dakotas with heavy snows or rains.

Suggestions to go south even to I44/40 through OK, or you could cruise parts of Route 66 which run close to those. Lots of choices, and things to see along any route.

We live in Idaho west of Jackson and this is good advice. I-90 in Montana is another good route. Best to keep options open, ensure you have plans to overnight as needed. Wind is another significant factor in many areas as are unstable snow conditions especially during the shoulder seasons - roads close due to avalanche risks. Recommend you download state 511 apps and become familiar with them - they will keep you updated on road conditions. Spaces are wide and open in the west- storms can hit fast and hard. But It’s beautiful.
Make certain you have emergency supplies and warm gear “in case”. We got caught in a rogue storm early November north of Moab - a semi- driver led a long caravan thru the pass and down the mountain. A 30 minute trip took 4 plus hours. This is not the norm but it happens. Also top off your gas tank often in case you need to take an alternative route. The next gas station may be further than planned - especially if you are pulling a trailer.

I just outlined the worst case scenarios - do not be discouraged. But be cautious. Safe travels!
