Seriously though (although as you probably know by today, I'm being serious about the smoke, too), that looks like a great trip.

Who knew that the fires in California etc would cause the air quality to be worse than the big cities!
We were luck and got a place inside the park at Canyon.
The trick is that there are no reservations and you have to be at a campground very early to get a spot.
We made a mistake and reserved a spot in Powell east of Cody ( the blurb said 15 min from the park entrance, but not that the entrance mentioned was three parks from Yellowstone!
This would be a two hour drive in and out!
We took a chance on getting a place and got the last place at 10:30 AM in Canyon.
If you want a spot then get a spot outside, but CLOSE so that you can get to the grounds early early early.
The commercial campground at Fishing Bridge has a computer that tells the opened and closed reserved and non-reserved spots and the history of when they filled each day previously.
EARLY EARLY EARLY.
This applies also to going to the various spots you want to visit as when more people get on the road and the Buffalo and bear jams start you will spend hours to get by.
Start early and get there before the crowds!!!
We stayed in the campground with nothing besides a space to park so Frank had to "boondock".
No problem except that the solar panel did not give the power it should due to the heat when the panel should have been putting out the max.
We converted the fridge to an ice box by stuffing the freezer with ice (in baggies) and putting a tray with a large baggie full of ice.
This along with an ice chest in the van took care of the problems.
The solar panel took care of all of the other needs for the camper.

I found it funny to be in the traffic jams; people would roll down their window and ask what was ahead...

A bison? Maybe they had seen enough bison and would quickly pull around...

A bear? Maybe they would stay for that...

It was like they were on a shopping trip and needed to get everything on their list, but no more than that.

Thanks for the report on strategies for getting a camping spot. Lately, I've been considering how we might make a trip with our trailer.

We stayed in West Yellowstone on our last trip in 2009, before we had a trailer. Everything is a haul from the edges of the park, and the traffic just adds to the time you spend in your car.

The worst of the smoke is from Oregon fires and one in Idaho, but California is contributing.

Soon we'll have plenty more smoke from Idaho and our very own fires. But we lucked out in July this year.

It's getting annoying.

Too bad the panel wasn't putting out what it should.

Still looking like fun, though. It's always an adventure...

We're to blame

Every year for the past four years we've headed west and passed through Yellowstone/Teton adding to the traffic. It's hard to resist especially with the senior pass. In late August/early September it's always been smokey. In Yellowstone campground availability can be found here. Just outside the parks are dozens of NFS campgrounds and the two large Teton camprounds seldom fill that time of year.

This years trip was to visit the parks in California but we've already changed our minds on that. Not sure where we'll go but I'm sure we'll add to the traffic at Yellowstone at some point. Like I said, it's hard to resist. Safe travels JD and thanks for posting.

Off to Glacier National Park today.
Again it is difficult to get a spot in the park, but the commercial RV parks don't seems to be as far away.
Any suggestions?

If you are going to be on the East side, try to make an early drive through 2 Medicine to try for a site. While often filled, my favorite Glacier campground.

In any case, drive out to the Polebridge Mercantile on the West side for the best sticky buns & cinnamon rolls you will ever find. Almost 30 miles of so - so paved & gravel road, so leave the trailer...

Like Yellowstone, Glacier has a campground availability site.
Glacier National Park Campground Status

Also like Yellowstone lots of people.

We stayed at Two Medicine which was one of the last to fill. Very nice. There is a 22' length limit on the Going to the Sun road so you can't take the trailer. We went east to west (which puts you farther from the edge ) and returned to camp via route 2.

Left Frank in the RV park in St Mary and drove north to Canada just to say we went.
It's a lot like Montana, but a lot of places were closed for Heritage day.
Both the Canadians and the US let us in!

Billings MT last night to Devils Tower tonight.
Lots of motorcycles on a side trip from Sturgis.
I was surprised that not many stayed here at Devils Tower tonight.Click image for larger version
