Interesting as I have the exact same response with the so called high tax states: CA, NY, CT, NJ MA, and a few others.

And I have yet to have found a connection between high taxes and great roads (and low taxes and lousy roads). Some of the lowest tax states are due to other sources of income for the state: for example, Nevada has gambling, Alaska has oil. I don't have a problem with gamblers or oil paying my taxes.

I find California to be one of the most interesting states. Seven of the world's 8 climate zones can be found within the state. Where else can one snow ski in the morning and water ski in the afternoon. Do not forget Death Valley and its surroundings, and Yosemeite NP is one of my favorites, next to Badlands. The weather is extraordinary and it is also the nations bread basket, nearly 75% of all produce is grown there. The refrigerator trains leave twice weekly to the rest of the country filled with abundance. Other than the wildfires, earthquakes, and mud slides, it is relatively safe place to live !!

Where else? Arizona for one.

They were skiing at Snowbowl in May this year, long after the waterskiing season opened in March or so. It’s all about elevation.

The one thing you can’t do is surf in the evening...

Arizona is a relatively low tax state. Healthcare is pretty good and insurance affordable, provided you live in one of the urban counties. That’s something I haven’t read much about in this thread, but it should be a major concern for full-timers.

The issue I see is health care and insurance. Emergency care is available anywhere, but in the event of a major health event, the need to stay in-network to minimize out-of-pocket costs means you may end up having to live in your state of domicile. If that happens, quality of life issues do matter.
