1971 Trillium 1300 Axle Replacement
Hello All,
I recently discovered my 1971 trillium 1300 needs a new axle . I was replacing my tires and noticed my torsion axel did not budge when lifting the trailer which makes me believe that it needs a replacement. I'm not sure about the torsion axle dimensions and information for replacement (If anyone knows the size and where to get one that would be great, I am in Ontario, Canada) but I'm also seeing some folks who switched to leaf spring axle. I'm curious if anyone has switched/replaced their axel and what their experiences were doing it and if there is any recommendations you may have for me. Im interested in flexiride aswell. does anyone know what the starting angle should be?
Thanks for your time

Here's where I had my Trillium 4500 axle replaced:
Paul Neumeister
A1 Auto Refinishing
345 Huron Rd
Sebringville, ON N0K 1X0
+1 519-393-6410
Paul first welded on an adapter plate, then bolted on the new axle. (original axle was welded on)
I was very happy with the result. He had previously replaced the axle on my Boler 13.
Paul also does general repairs and body work on molded fiberglass trailers and sells some new old stock trailer parts.

Paul replaced the axle in my '79 Boler just a couple of weeks ago. Really a straight guy. Recommended.

Nathan,
Paul was able to replace the axle without separating the body from the frame. My Trillium 4500 axle replacement is explained in this thread:
https://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/...xle-79244.html
Read the whole thread. In short, here was the challenge:
"This is not a simple repair. It is challenging because the original axle is welded into a joint where two frame rail sections are welded together. The axle bracket actually reinforces the frame rail joint. Because the new axle will be bolted in instead of welded, the frame rail joints will need to be reinforced in some other way."
Paul reinforced "the frame rail joints that intersect w/the axle brackets by adding laser cut fish plates to these joints." These are sturdy, long plates that span the frame rail joints.

Just had axle replaced on my1980 trillium 4500. It was clapped out with torsion bars tilted downward, and hitting hard on the smallest bumps. It was not a simple or cheap job. Don’t have details with me but can provide if interested. Each trailer needs to be measured accurately for width and axles made to order. Torsion arms are level now, height of trailer is increased about 2 inches and rides so much smoother.

Dexter axle
I live in Calgary. I went to a local shop called Standen's and ordered a Dexter axle. Although the old axle was rated at 2,000-lb, they were able to beef the replacement up to 2,200-lb. (Didn't want to go all the way up to 3,500-lb.) Did the installation myself. Unbolted the old axle and brought it in to the shop, so they could use it as a template for the fittings. The new one fit like a charm. Kept the old hubs and brakes and just bolted them onto the new axle. Took it down to Utah about four weeks ago, and had no problems whatsoever.

Thomas- can you tell me where you had your axle replaced? I have a 1979 Triullium 4500 that probably needs a new one. I'm in Ontario (for now).

Canadian Axle Inc in Invernary ON
We just took delivery of a FlexRide for our 1300 from Canadian Axle Inc in Invernary ON. The person who assisted us Michaela) was awesome to work with. It was ~$800 plus delivery, which was very reasonable to our remote island in BC and came to around $1100 all told. This all happened between May and June 2023. We're getting ready to stick it on as we speak. We opted for the electric brake option, just in case, but maybe that wasn't necessary for such a light trailer. Might be handy if we end up getting a smaller vehicle to tow it around.
