I can only speak to the RAV4. The 3500# rated trims (there are two now, Adventure and TRD) have factory engine and transmission cooling enhancements (larger radiator with larger integrated transmission cooler). Based on previous experience with a Toyota tow vehicle, the enhancements do matter.

Cooling capacity has a lot to do with reliability and durability, but not with safety; hence, the Darwin Effect doesn't apply. With just 184 pounds-feet of torque, 110 less than some these others I'm considering, the Rav 4 Adventure's performance would be questionable.
