Honda has just released details of the next generation Passport.

The Passport is already a good tow vehicle, but bland styling, dated interior, and fussy infotainment put off many potential buyers. I am liking the changes and looking forward to seeing one in person.

I am glad to hear Honda will retain the strong and smooth 3.5L V6, and I am assuming it will also keep the same 5000# maximum tow rating. This is definitely on my short list to eventually replace our 2011 Pilot (255K).

Thoughts from the group?

The AWD, NA engine and factory hitch, wiring and tow mode seem promising. I also like the 2 row seating.

Full factory tow wiring was partly what led me to the Pilot back in 2013. And yes, I like the fact that, along with the Pilot and Ridgeline variants, they're assembled domestically with a high NA parts content.

Nice looking....Honda makes good vehicles. Personally.....I prefer a truck but to each their own. Honda and Nissan are talkin about merging because of Nissan's dire condition.

I remember when Honda Passports looked like this one.
Not much of a tow rating though.

I’ve thought long and hard about the Maverick, especially now that you can configure the hybrid with AWD and tow package, but in the end, I realized I really have little use for an open cargo bed. Luggage, pet transport, Costco runs- I prefer a secure, climate-controlled cargo space. In addition, even with 4WD they’re squirrelly in the snow compared to a good AWD crossover. I’ve owned several trucks in the past, and they just didn’t work for me.

The idea of a Honda-Nissan merger scares me. What good could possibly come of it? Saving Nissan will suck money from Honda at a time it needs to focus on getting its own mojo back. The new Passport seems to be headed in the right direction, but it’s still pretty derivative.

I hear ya....like I said....to each their own....whatever works for you is goodness. I have a hard shell tonneau cover on my full size truck....like having a great waterproof trunk....for us....great for camping. Our truck is also a crew cab so lots of room inside for us and the dog. I love our truck...works well for us. I agree with your merger comments.......the Nissan corp. is in deep financial trouble......hope Honda understands that and has some built in protections. Over the years.....I've done lots of hunting in mountainess snowy conditions.....my current truck and past trucks have all been 4 wheel drive......never had a problem with control.....was very glad to have that truck bed when packing out an animal......everybody's needs are different. Good luck in getting a good vehicle.....be safe out there.

Jon,
Thanks for posting this. We have a 2011 Honda Pilot (bought for the same reasons as you: reliability, factory tow package, 3.5L V6,...), so I have started thinking in terms of future replacements.
I'm on the Honda Piloteers Forum, and it appears that there are a variety of issues in the 2016 and newer Pilots, that we didn't have in our series, so I'll be interested to see how the Passport shapes up.

I figure ours had a few more good years. I’d like to see 300K but will probably upgrade to something newer before the 330K timing belt service, so I’m not in a hurry.

I tried the 2019 Passport. I felt the driver's side visibility was really poor (I almost hit a cyclist on the test drive!) I did like that the seats actually folded totally flat. But I ended up with. a Ridgeline, also 5000 pounds towing capacity, and more versatile cargo space. The Passport does have a lot of advantages though in terms of protected space.

Well that is because it was not a Harley. Not totally kidding. 95% kidding. But over in Europe they apparently have Harley "tow trucks". Read about it a couple years ago. They were having problems getting tow trucks to broke down vehicles which were blocking the road. Motorcycles get through stuck traffic pretty well so someone had a brain storm. And apparently a good one. They have some kind of a large Harly which then has a frame in the panniers. The put this under each wheel and jack it up and put bogie wheels under the wheels and then fasten them together and fasten that to the back of the motorycle and then the motorcycle slowly tows the car to a pull out where a regular tow truck can take over.

Kind of weird and would love to see a video of them doing it. Like even funnier than the VW bug fifth wheels. ;-)

Check out the Honda Ridgeline.
It has a huge hidden in-bed storage.
And the rear seats fold vertically so that you have a lot of "storage space".
Plus you get the truck bed and a great looking truck with 3.5 V6 engine.

Absolutely. The Ridgeline, Passport, and Pilot are variations of the same chassis and drivetrain with different passenger and cargo configurations, all well suited for light to medium towing duty. Choose the variant that best suits your carrying needs. For me that’s an SUV.

Funny you mention the trunk. My Pilot has a hidden trunk behind the 3rd row as well. I have used it well for tools, tie-downs, cleaning cloths, and emergency equipment. It’s just big enough and not too big to get heavy and unmanageable. When I looked at the current Passport, its under-floor storage was shallow, mostly taken up with the donut spare, and the cover was longer, so you’d have to empty more of the cargo bay to access it. My Pilot has a full-size spare that mounts underneath.

Then there’s size. The new Passport has the same footprint as my 2nd generation Pilot, at 190”, and cargo space behind the second row is similar, which is one of the reasons I’m looking at it. The latest Pilot is about 10” longer, while the current Ridgeline is a whopping 20” longer. If anything I’d prefer smaller, not larger, for our next tow vehicle.

Breakdowns
Back in the 50s and early 60s my home town Police
Department had quite a few three wheel Harley’s with a box between the rear wheels for police accessories like you might keep in a car trunk. If a car broke down in the downtown it was not rare to see the Trike pull up behind him and after the policeman talked to the driver, he’d get behind the car bumper with the front wheel of the Harley. He’d ease that Harley clutch out and bump the car bumper and then once he got a few inches of roll out of the car, he’d pour the coal to that little 61 Harley, and push the car out of the traffic to the side of a less busy street. Other times the driver would dump the clutch and then the car with a dead battery would start and drive away with a wave.

We had a Midwest Institute of Park Executives meeting in Cedar Rapids in 1974. The Parks commissioner ordered a police escort with lights and sirens for two busses filled with attendees through downtown, past a couple big city parks and out to picnic dinner with unlimited beer and roast beef at Ellis park along the river. That’s the last time I remember seeing motorcycle policemen in Cedar Rapids. The Parks Director provided a designated driver bus ride back to the hotel. Those were the days.

“Nifty thrifty Honda 50!” And “ You meet the nicest people on a Honda.” Remember those advertising lines? Lost in the 50’s tonight

We're looking at 2026 Passport too

We are looking for a new tow vehicle for our 16' Scamp, to replace our current 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup. The 2026 Honda Passport, coming out in the first quarter of 2025, is top of our list. Honda has said that the tow rating will continue to be 5000#. They are dropping the current Passport 9 speed automatic transmission and going with the 10 speed automatic in the new Passport, already in use in the Pilot. This transmission has a "tow" setting to use when towing. The 2026 Passport has an upgraded navigation system, which is another reason we are waiting for the 2026 and decided not to get a 2025 Passport. There are many mid-size SUVs and pickup trucks that we looked at, but many of them have turbocharged four-cylinder engines and some have CVT transmissions. I feel much more comfortable with a v6 and 10 speed transmission for towing.

I hope you will post a review if you do purchase one. I'd be especially interested in your impressions of the infotainment system (Apple Car Play in particular) and the transmission towing performance in mountains.

I also love the old Frontiers. My last truck was a 1998 Frontier King Cab, 4 cylinder with manual transmission, manual transfer case, manual front hubs. It was possibly the last small truck available from any manufacturer with the full manual 4x4 set-up. Fun truck! The 4.0L V6 with 5-speed automatic was a good truck for towing, but by then I had a wife and kids, and that back seat in the crew cab version just didn't cut it! We sold the Frontier and bought a minivan, and later the Pilot when the Scamp came along.

Jon, we bought our 2006 Frontier new & it’s been the most dependable vehicle we’ve ever owned & it’s done a good job towing our Scamp. We live in Colorado, so we’ve done a lot of mountain towing, towed the Scamp over the Million Dollar Highway many times. The Frontier will be a good used vehicle for somebody. I’ll do a post after we have a year or so experience towing with the Passport after we get it. A big reason we are getting a new tow vehicle is to get navigation & driver assist features that our 2006 Frintier doesn’t have. I think the Passport’s 10 speed auto trans with tow setting & v6 engine should make towing the Scamp a breeze. We’re looking at the RTL trim level for the Passport as we don’t ‘plan’ on doing any off-roading. But we’re still thinking about that, as we sometimes say “Wonder what’s down that road?” and end up on some rougher roads than we planned! The Trailsport trim on the Passport comes with an optional full-size spare, which I think is a must when towing. I’m going to see if that could be ordered on the RTL trim level as well.

The full-size spare sits vertically against the side of the open rear cargo area and steals quite a bit of space.

Ted, did you look into a new Frontier? 3.8L V6, tow mode, factory hitch and wiring. Likely to be less expensive than the Passport and more readily available. It's not perfect for towing my 17' Casita but should be just fine for a 16' Scamp. I don't know about navigation, just use Android Auto if I need it.

Shelby, yes, we looked at the mid-size pickups including the Frontier. We're thinking we would use an SUV more than a pickup at this stage of life. We're sick of hauling stuff!
