7 pin 12volt wire? where too?
ok this is sort of a i know what i have to do but want your take question.
going to be towing the scamp with my ford ranger. it had a 4 way, i just put the 7 way on.
for the 12 volt power wire, about the only place i can find to hook it up is the battery, so what amp fuse should i put in the line?
or is there a better spot to hook up too? i have a spot in the interior fuse block i could use,, but didn't want to route wire threw all that stuff. and not sure what size wire is feeding that fuse anyway.

I wired mine from the battery and used a 40 amp circuit breaker (on a 4 gauge wire). It is important that the fuse is small enough to protect the wiring if it is shorted.
What gauge is the wire that you are running back to the connector?

i don't remember the gauge off hand, same as the conector has though,i want to say 8 ga, but don't quote me on that.i was guessing a 30 amp,,,40 is probably better. do they make an inline circuit breaker?

Has anyone used this product to feed the trailer battery from the TV?
Amazon.com: Sunforce 60113 150 Amp Battery Isolator: Automotive
Last time I did one of these I used a isolator relay wired to an accessory circut but this looked interesting and tech does change as they say.

When I wired my Tundra I used 10 gauge stranded wire from the battery to the 7 pin socket with a 30 amp circuit breaker in the positive line mounted on the wheel well near the battery. I found some plastic spiral wire protector to cover the two wires. The whole thing was wire tied under the truck to the inside of the C channel frame. Worked fine. Raz

You need to size the fuse/breaker for the size of the smallest wire in the circuit. If the 12V wire on the trailer is #10, regardless of what size you use in the vehicle, then you need to use a 30A fuse.
It is still a good idea to size the wire from the battery to the plug larger than that on the trailer, to lessen line losses.

ok then 8 ga to run to the rear of the truck, plug has 10 so a 30 amp and i should be just fine. i'll probably do this while i'm camping next week. see if i can't blow up my truck in the woods so i'm properly stranded,,,lol

John, make certain you take lots of beer for survival should you get stranded.
Though, your plan sounds like a sound one.

On my Ranger there is a junction post on the drivers side of the fender. Wires go to the battery and alternator and ???. That is where I hooked up my battery Isolator.
Alternator to Isolator. 1 wire to junction box, 1 wire to rear 7 pin plug. If you are running a wire for the 12V you could run one for brakes at the same time.

John, make sure that you have a circuit breaker or fuse on the trailer battery as well. If the charging wire gets shorted, both batteries wil try to power the "load".

Time for me to do this too.
Please bear with me, I can be a bit slow.
If I understand correctly, I am to:
1) Pull a 10 gage wire with a 30 amp inline fuse from the alternator to the hitch at the rear of the car.
2) Pull a 10 gage wire with a 30 amp inline fuse from the trailer's battery's positive terminal to the front of the trailer.
3) Attach each to one corresponding 6 or 7 pin connector along with the 4 wires that already exist matching the standard wiring plan.
What am I missing?
More questions:
&bull An RV place said that I need a heavier gauge ground wire than is already in the 4 pin wiring.
Do I?
Where would it get attached?
&bull Attach to the alternator or battery in the car?
&bull Is there any downside to charging while driving?
&bull Can you over charge the trailer battery?
&bull RV place said I did not need a battery isolator in the trailer because there is no power flow when the car is turned off.
True for the original wiring but it is only 14 gauge so I need to run a heavier wire. Is this still true?
&bull What else am I missing?
