Joe, go to the document center and pull up posts on axle replacement. I'm sure there are many but you may be able to narrow it down by adding the year of your trailer. Good luck

This place has all kinds of axles, and even does alignments on trailer axles. We purchased our Flexiride axle for our Scamp from them, and had them change our leading axle orientation to a trailing arm system.

When you replaced your leading axle to a trailing axle, did you have to change the position of the axle in order to keep them centered? If you did move the axle forward, where did you place it. I have a 76 13' Scamp and if I move the axle forward to maintain center, I either have to place it below the "dance floor" or in the "dance floor".

If it is welded on, I recommend that you replace it with a bolt on that has the capability to add brakes. This gives you the option of doing a replacement in the future in just a couple of hours without having to hire a welder.

I replaced the axle on my 16' Scamp last year with a 3,500 lb. Flexiride Torsion Axle w/Electric Brakes. I ordered this from Southwest Wheel. This axle has splines for the arms so the ride height can be adjusted in 7 degree increments. I particularly like this feature because I do take my scamp on some pretty tough off road areas and I wanted it raised up a bit for clearance. You need to measure the width of the frame mounting points as well as the outside width side to side from the wheel mounting surface to make sure you get a good fit. They build the axle per your requirements and only take a few days to do that and get it shipped to you. I suggest talking to them by phone before ordering. 800-866-3336

The Flexi-Ride Axle is a great axle, installed it on my Boler and love the adjustability but a note:
The suspension arms on the FlexiRide are 1.5" shorter that the Dexter (4.5" vs 6") so you need to relocate the axle to keep the wheels centred in wheel openings and to keep the original spindle centerline.

Casita axles bolt in, whereas our Scamp axle was welded on.

Our Casita axle was run into by a drunk and ruined the left side. She hit the wheel, but not the camper. Lucky! Called Casita and they gave us the exact part # to buy. We could buy just an axle for $280 or a complete axle with brakes for $400. That was a no brainer. It would take $120 in labor to switch the wheels over. Took the axle to the local auto repair shop (small town and I taught their boys) and they installed it for $50 (plus I had to buy a round of beers at the Legion).

We had a choice of regular or the high lift axle. We like the regular.

Our 1976 13' Scamp currently has a leading axle. I am ordering a trailing axle and am ordering a Dexter #9 with 10 degree down with brake plates but no brakes. We tow with either a Toyota Tacoma or E350 Ford van, so at this point don't see the need for brakes but can add them later. I have to move the axle location to under the dance floor and ordered the high bracket profile, in order to account for the torsion bend in the axle. By moving under the dance floor this will give us 4" of lift and with the 10 degree down and high bracket another 2". This seems high but we drive on lots of gravel and poorly maintained US Forest Service roads. We plan to use the 13" tires but are considering going with 14" when they need to be replaced.

The only damage to the frame is from hitting something with the front and a bent spindle. So I am looking for clearance.

Any thoughts or comments, I haven't placed the order for the new axle yet. If I am making a mistake, please let me know.

If you are thinking of adding brakes in the future, might as well order alxle with them now and save some $$. Also much better to have them and never need them!

I tend to agree with that thought. If you are like me you will probably never get around to doing it later.

Axel with brakes on order, thank you both for suggesting that direction. Main point is saving tow vehicle brakes.
