The rubber bars in the axle will be deformed and the axle sags and the rubber also gets hard and no longer gives much if any when a load is applied.
In the case of my 1985 16 foot
Scamp (same year as yours) if you stepped into the camper the
tires would flex, but the axle didn't move much if any.
I don't know about your axle but mine was an AL-KO unit and the axle was kinda triangular and not square like the Dexter or Lippert.
I had a Flexi-ride manufactured for my modified
Scamp with a 3000 lb rating (stock was 3500 for the replacements) and the original AL-KO was 2500 if I remember correctly.
If you look carefully at the axle and if it is an AL-KO there will be a metal tag with a serial number and model number which you can look up for dimensions and ratings and call AL-KO for data and to order if you like.
FLexi-ride has shorter arms and would need to be slightly repositioned on installation, but the ride angle is adjustable.
Also available are mounting brackets which can be installed between the frame and the axle so that it bolts to the welded in bracket.

Dexter has purchased AL-KO and they can perhaps match the number on your axle.

I found the start angle etc confusing and since I was modifying my trailer I chose the Flexi-ride since the angle can be set anywhere it needed to be.
Of course you can call Scamp parts department and order one from them
