IMHO, those 8" boat trailers were only ever intended for short local trips, not for interstate hauling. I had a light utility trailer with them and swapped them for 13" wheels as soon as I could (yes, that required new fenders). trailer was rated for 1000 lbs gross.

I also had a small tent trailer 40 yrs. ago that I pulled from Dallas to Lake Louise, Canada and back down through California and back home. Never really gave the tires a second thought until after I returned home and the cords were showing on both of them. Best I recall, I don't think I even had a spare tire. Ah, to be young and just as dumb as I am now.

with those 8 and 12" trailer tires, a spare is as close as a walmart. they sell them tire+rim, ready to go.

Kind of doubt if they would deliver on the side of the road...

Have seen that set up before. I pull a 17' Casita travel trailer and some states consider this a triple tow set up and if frowned upon. Some will only let you pull a triple. tow behind a 5th wheel trailer. I think if it is bolted to the frame it is considered an extension of the trailer and not considered a trailer in some states. Seems it would work great behind a motorhome as in the pic. Thanks for the suggestion. dm

I mounted a front receiver on our '17 4Runner for this purpose. According to the scale I stopped at during our last trip, I have 450# to work with up front (and a 300# motorcycle). I plan to use a hitch carrier for trips to local riding areas anyway, so I am going to give this a try. It appears there are two main concerns: Headlight usability and CVGWR. We don't load the Casita heavily (3050# is the heaviest we've ever had it) so there is hope. Thanks everyone for your suggestions and ideas!
