Fiber Stream Axles

I've seen the question asked a number of times, but no good responses. Here's what I've learned about the axles and brakes on my '81 Fiber Stream.

Axles were manufactured by LaSalle Deitch of Riverside California. The company still exists, but quit making these axles in the early 1980's. The brakes were provided by another company, Fayette most likely, and are an odd 7.25" x 1.5" These were also out of production since the early 1990's.

I'm looking to rebuild mine. Anyone have a source for parts: magnets, hubs, brake shoes etc?

I do believe if I was in your shoes, I'd be looking at converting to the common Dexter axle with whatever brakes are commonly used today so that parts availability would be a non-issue.

Rather not spend the additional $600+ if I can help it.

Would still need a new brake assembly as well, and none work with the offset and bearing size/location. Ours arenít interchangeable with anything currently manufactured.

I do appreciate the ideas. Iím really hoping to stumble upon someone who knows someone with new old stock.

You can likely find a bolt-on replacement at a salvage yard, for the axle/brake assembly. You may need to have a welder shorten the axle, that's an easy job.

You are probably done with this but Les Schwab has my unit and they just put on brakes only to find they could not put the same drums back on. If you reply I will try to let you know who they sourced out from. It was a company in Spokane.

Would like to find out. It turns out there are quite a few of us in Oregon and Washington with these trailers, and the same issues. Anything you solve could help a number of us.

Thanks!

I will post what I can and find out the manufacturer that they were able to find for the trailer.

Then at least one Les Schwab in the greater Portland Area will know how to install the brakes

I dunno, but if I had a vintage trailer like that, and it was worth keeping, I'd be trying to retrofit a Dexter torsion axle, or something similar on it.

I had the same brake pads on my 1981 Trillium 5500, and was never able to find shoes, magnets etc can be re-used.
One option is to get your original shoes re-lined, there are still plenty of shops that re-line brakes, as it is a common practice for heavy equipment and non mobile crane motors
