Forest towing

I am a total newbie so i have a neebie question. I have a Subaru Forester with a 2500 lb limit. Do u think I could tow a scamp 13 deluxe or even a 16. I live on long island. NY. Is there any one within 100 miles who can show me his camper . I have never been in a 13.
Tnx Marty

Check your owners manual, but I think the Forester tow rating, with trailer brakes, is 2400 lbs. Never the less, a 13er with trailer brakes should not be a problem.

You can check out the loaded weights of various trailers here:

http://lakeshoreimages.com/spreadsheets/Weight.xls

This is the link to the downloadable spreadsheet from 'Trailer Weights in the Real World' Unless noted as shared, these are trailer weights as weighed by a forum member as loaded campers arrived at various rallies.

Most Subarus I have researched have a tongue weight limit of 200 pounds. That in turn limits you to a 2000 pound travel trailer in order to maintain the recommended minimum 10% tongue weight. That might include a Scamp 13D, but it will not include a Scamp 16. Check your owner's manual carefully for other caveats related to towing. There's more to it than just the trailer weight.

In 2014 Subaru dropped the tow rating of the Forester from 2400lbs to 1500lbs. The 200 lb tounge weight remained. The work of Dewy, Cheatm, and Howe no doubt. Raz

Over the years Ford Crown Victoria got more and more powerful engines, but the tow rating slipped from 5000 to 1500... Looks like all manufactures limited tow rating of sedans to 1500.

Isn't that when the Forester got a CVT transmission? Programmed to maximize fuel economy, I'm sure, as Subaru went all-out to woo mainstream buyers and raise CAFE. It may not all be about the lawyers...

Ironically, the same year we lost Tom Magliozzi.

Sad.

Tnx for the responses. I will start looking for a 13d and c if my wife would be comfortable in it. Or we might need a bigger car

The Forester has historically had a higher tow rating than my front drive 2008 Escape (4CYL-5SPD). Of course, do your homework and decide for yourself.
We have towed our Scamp13D front bath, tens of thousands of miles with our Escape and found it competent and comfortable....
