GMC Terrain does the trick!

Here's a picture with our 13' Scamp deluxe (about 1800 lbs, I'm guessing) hooked up to our new 2010 Terrain. The Terrain has a V6 /towing package and handles the Scamp very nicely as it has a 3500 lb towing capacity. On our 2000 mile round trip from Iowa to Alabama we got 17 mpg, we also get 24 mpg on the highway when not towing.

At what speed do you drive?

(The air resistance factor increases as the square of the speed, so at 50 = 2500, but at 60 = 3600! IOW, for a 20% increase in speed, drag increases 40%.)

Has anyone tried an air deflector? I am considering one in an effort to improve mileage. Hey if they work for semis, why not eggs?

Roger, I typically run 60-62 mph on the Interstates, 55-60 mph on the 2 lane roads. Regards, Ron

Very nice set up... But then I am a GMC man... We had a 04 GMC XUV we towed with & loved it. We got T-Boned in June by a tourist doing 70mph , no skid marks, they had to cut my wife out of the car, but we both walked away... 5 Star side impact rating was good.. I found another 04 GMC XUV in SC so I bought it.. This 1 have the V8 in it & I get 5mpg more than I got with the 6 cyl & this 1 has all the bells & whisles.. Love my GMC...

I thought the GMC Terrain was supposed to get 32 hwy?? I'm glad I got a HHR instead, I get a combined 32 Avg city/hwy, but I do alot more hwy miles right now.

The wife and I have been looking at slightly larger vehicles... and I have noticed that most owners post significantly lower fuel economy figures for small SUVs than the EPA ratings. If you look at compact cars, most people report getting similar numbers to the EPA's highway ratings. The new EPA testing procedure is supposed to take higher speeds and AC use into account, but it seems like they are producing unusually high numbers for small SUVs. I don't know why that is, but it is disappointing.

My car is rated at 26/33 MPG and my lifetime average is 37 MPG. I regularly hit 40+ MPG, but I also tow trailers... so that tends to drop it down. I have never gotten lower than 30 MPG until my last tank (first tank with the Scamp)... I got 26.8 MPG towing the Scamp, but that was all local driving and included a lot of stops. I hope to get a little better out on the highway, but only time will tell.

The GMC Terrain caught my attention with their 33 MPG claim (EPA's claim, not GMC's)... but I would like to rent one for a week and see what I actually get before we seriously consider buying one.

Panoz77--I'm afraid your mixing apples and oranges when speaking of gas mileage on the GMC Terrain. First of all, the 2 wheel drive, I4 engine does state 32 mpg and most owners get that or close to it. I own a V6 AWD terrain and I'm towing a trailer. It's not exactly an apples to apples comparison as I'd hope you'd agree.

Mcbrew-- be aware that the I4 and the V6 have considerably different mpg ratings. The V6 2 wheel drive is 24 highway and 17 city. The AWD will cost you a couple of mpg and towing a 1500-2000 lb trailer will cost you quite a bit more depending on the terrain ( no pun intended) your traveling on. The V6 has a towing capability of 3500 lbs where the I4 has a much higher mpg but also 1000lbs max towing capability.

PS--my last trip of 2000 miles WITHOUT the trailer resulted in 23.7 mpg on fairly flat terrain/roads

Awesome! I also have a Black GMC Terrain. Mine is SLE-2 4 cyl AWD. I use it to pull my 2009 13 ft scamp too!
