Hyundai Santa Fe

I have a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe, 3.5 Liter V6, with 40,000 miles. I want to know if this is suitable to tow a 17' Casita.

Hi, Gary,
You need GVWR, GCWR, towing capacity, tongue weight allowed and normal loaded weight of 17s for a start. Depends on how you travel and how loaded you want to be. The numbers are easy to figure out if you check your owner's manual. You should have no surprises by knowing your numbers in advance.

I'm sure there are some Santa Fe owners here to let you know their situations.

probably not suitable, Casitas have heavy tongue weight. We just brought our new to us 1996 Casita LD home yesterday but towed it with a 2012 Dodge Ram pickup with the V8. Towed nice with the truck.

Gary take a look at the thread Trailer Weights In The Real World to get a feel for what you can expect the various fiberglass trailers to weigh loaded for camping.

Probably not Gary, at least a 17'er, the 16' model has a lot lower tongue weight though. My 17' SD is 364# and that's with a fully loaded fresh water tank which is at the rear of the trailer.

If the 17' Casita in question has no bathroom up front, it could be ok. The front bath is what makes the 17'er so tongue heavy. Like Dave pointed out, a 16' won't have that problem.

I'm assuming your Santa Fe has a maximum tow capacity of 3000 lb but I could be wrong; what does your owner's manual say? A dealer could run your vin number and tell you if it's equipped with tow package, and if not, what should be added to your vehicle to make it ready for towing. Sometimes an aftermarket transmission cooler is needed, for example.
