Jeep Trailhawk towing an Oliver

Hi, glad to be a new member.

Getting ready to purchase a new travel trailer and I was wondering if anyone has towed an Oliver Legacy Elite I with the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk?
Mine has a GVWR of 5,500 lbs. Thanks, C

Hmmm… I’m not optimistic now that you’ve clarified we’re talking about the Cherokee, not the Grand Cherokee. What are the tow ratings for this model?

For a complete answer we’ll need more information, including the curb weight, the GCWR, and the weight of passengers and cargo you'll be carrying in or on the tow vehicle.

Figure around 4000# GVW with 400-450# TW for the loaded trailer, based on the two Oliver Elites in our “Trailer Weights in the Real World” database. That’s a fairly small sample size, and one was running less than 10% TW.

There are online towing weight calculators that can help with the math, but it’s really pretty straightforward once you have all the data. Add the curb weight plus passengers and cargo plus 450# TW plus about 75# for the hitch (probably needs WDH), and see if you are still under the GVWR. Then add the axle weight of the trailer (figure 3600#) and see if you are within the GCWR. Most people would want some margin.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

There are a bunch of Elite owners over on the Oliver forum that would be happy to talk tow vehicles with you.

Jeep Trailhawk towing

In researching a tow vehicle for a future camper upgrade from our Scamp 13 I purchased a Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk V6 with a tow rating of 6200#s rather than the smaller Cherokee v6 rated for only 4000#s. Its better to have a towing margin than to haul at the maximum rating.
