Replace Axle 1984 Scamp

Hi All

I am looking to replace my axle on a 1984 Scamp 16ft Deluxe.
What Model is recommend? Where should I buy it online?
Last, does anyone have a recommendation as to who to have install it in Virginia?

Thanks

I would look for a reputable axle shop or a place that makes and sells utility trailers (the kind landscapers use). Let them do the measuring and ordering. Rubber torsion axles are custom made to spec, so if you measure it yourself and make an error, you are out the cost of the axle.

The two main suppliers I am familiar with are Dexter and Lippert. On the 16' models, Scamp uses a Dexter #10 3500# axle with a 22.5 degree down angle and 10" brakes or the equivalent Lippert.

This would be a good time to inspect the frame very carefully. Older Scamp 16's are prone to frame weakness and failure under the front street side corner where the A-frame bend starts.

Flexiride is another manufacturer.
Planning on an axle replacement for my Trillium next spring, still debating Dexter vs Flexiride.

I ordered mine from Scamp. I was positive I was getting the correct axle, and the Scamp technicians gave the local shop all the measurements and tips for the install via a phone call.

Ordered the axle from Scamp and Fed Ex delivered it to my house five days later. It would have taken much longer to receive it directly from the manufacturer as they do not maintain an inventory, they make them after an order is recieved.

I would highlight this, in addition to the other good advice given. Not long after installing my new axle (ordered from Scamp), the frame broke in two just forward of this location. It is much stronger now. These old frames were I think a thinner material than current, and prone to holding moisture which rotted them from the inside.
