Scamp 19 conversions to king pin

In my search for a Scamp 19, I am discovering many have been converted from ball hitch to king pin hitch. Wondering what owners of Scamp 19's think of this, pro or con? Is there any legal liability in doing such a conversion. I know that there are federal DOT requirements for doing so with interstate trailers falling under federal DOT requirements. Any thoughts?

Problems during breakdon

I have a 2002 Goose Neck 19ft Scamp and my experience after a breakdown with my TV AAA could not find any hauler to take my camper and truck back for repairs.

Scamp 19 conversions to king pin

The new style hitch does away with the problem of not being able to have another truck tow the trailer. Any truck with rails installed should be able to tow it, if clearance allows.

There should be no legal liability if the conversion is done properly. I had a Scamp 19 and I hated the ball and coupler attachment. Had the Scamp not presented me with a constant flow of problems, I would have loved to convert the coupler to a king pin, thereby making it a true 5th wheel. And yes, there are Scamp 19 owners who have made the conversion.

I changed our scamp 19 to a bulldog hitch 2 5/8 inch ball. Made something like the new hitch scamp is selling and it works great.

Bought an escape 5.0 with an Anderson hitch and it seems really similar.

Such a bad idea that Anderson is selling it to the fifth wheel folks?

I don’t know what is best, but find something that works for you.

Scamp 19 conversion to Kingpin

In 2009 we converted our former Scamp 19 from the gooseneck hitch to a true kingpin hitch. Here is the link to our process with pics:

I see the advantage of converting to a fifth wheel, which was well pointed out by ROBERT HYSER having had a breakdown and no one to tow it. I was concerned why all these owners had converted and wondering why they had converted. Was concerned having retired from the transportation industry and knowing that if a commercial trailer operated under Federal DOT rules when modified that they need a recertification tag. No such requirement for RVs and personal trailers.

It is all cleared up in my mind, and thank you all who responded.

AAA to the rescue

Like Robert we broke down in north Georgia with our first Scamp 19 in tow. Luckily AAA had a rep near our location and he called for a tow truck large enough to tow both our truck with camper attached. Quite an experience I hope never to repeat!
