Towing a Scamp 19 my experience Part 2

Just about finished

I made a bracket system so I can replace the old hitch, change or modify the present hitch or build something new...

Proof will be in the "Pudding" I guess.

Photoshop has a free ap for phones etc photoshop express that might work for this

Can do

Its been a pleasure reading about your exploits my friend. You are not the type of person that frets and worries about changing a light bulb.

I hope you trip is a success. I know if you have any issues along the way you will stop in a greasy quonset hut out in the country somewhere and find a fella who welds plow blades all day and set 'ur to rights.

Great thread for pointing up the importance of matching tow vehicle to trailer.

Hope I am not behind you on the highway!

With the truck you have, I think I'd a just made that Scamp into a trailer
with a bumper hitch. Would've kept the box empty and addstorage to the "5th". I dont like the Scamp 5th idea either.

By extending the support point so far forward of its initial location, your hitch is now transferring quite a large bending moment to its attachment point on the trailer frame, which wasn't the case with the original factory configuration. Hopefully the Scamp frame will be able to resist that additional bending moment.

Not quite, Cap! We do a lot of steel fabrication down here in the 'oil patch'. And 'steelwise' we are a lot more generous than you are. Since your are very good at welding; I would add 1/4" thick 'brackets' shown in red (yours are on the 'skinny' side). This would beef up the X axis section modulus and should take care of vertical forces. I am still worried about the Y axis section modulus and horizontal bending moments. Go easy backing up or stepping on the brakes.

Those Gussets are already in... I didn't want to deal with any "Notch effect stresses"

Those are 3/8" gussets on 3.5" x 3.5" 1/4" wall HSS steel.
I'm no "engineer" but this trailer only weighs 3000# odd pounds.

I appreciate Icebreakers comments regarding the scamps frame is likely now the "weak link" and will be reinforcing the factories 2 x 3" transverse tubes that support the 12 x 12" mounting plate...

Remember the original mount is only 3.5 x 3.5" with 2 gussets at an odd angle welded to an off the shelf hitch.

You will be allot safer behind me on the highway than a Factory hitch.
If something goes seriously wrong with this rig, I will be towing a queen size FRP bed with no wheels and watching a scamp 16 sailing off into the weeds in my rear view mirror LOL.

I am pretty sure no "Engineer" came up with the Scamps coupler rig?

Sorry for sounding defensive LOL. This is all meant to be an "informational discussion" ?

Close up Picture of "Universal" base mount

You can swap out coupler type similar to a Reese Goose Box type system.
Snug fit 3.5 x 3.5 with 3 x Grade 8 bolts
(Zero play had to use a 5# hammer to slide it in...)

We appreciate your posting of this design & fabrication. I wish I could weld as well as you do.

We just compared with our steel fabrication practices here on the Gulf of Mexico. What you are doing may be perfectly all right in your neck of the wood. Do you have to go through a trailer inspection in BC ?

Trailer inspection ?

I have built a few trailers over the years here. Inspection here is pretty straight forward. There is an inspection process but it basically ensuring the coupler, axle and lighting are correct. Nobody looks at the design engineering or does welding inspections.
If I were approached by a commercial transport (Highways Inspector) he would see my approval stickers and wouldn't have anything to discuss...
To Cover my Axx I also had a certified welder / fabricator inspect my welding and he signed off on my build.

We are not quite as litigious in Canada as the USA so do your research.

Success It Tows like a dream

The Gooseneck works great follows like a Goose headed North...
No wobble no wiggle What a pleasure to "Jack Knife" into a tight parking spot.
Lots of clearance vertically and at box corners...

It might not make any difference to you in your application, but your safety chains are illegal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts according to 540 CMR 22.10

"... two safety chains shall connect the trailer and the towing vehicle, one on each side of the central trailer hitch..."

Reference: https://www.mass.gov/files/documents...9/540cmr22.pdf

I took my trailer to a local welding place and had them update my chains so one was on each side of the trailer hitch.

Scamp had one chain with two hooks bolted to the hitch in the center which REALLY didn't seem safe to me.
