Towing with mazda CX 5

Anyone out here towing with a Mazda CX5?
Can you put a transmission cooler on it?
I can’t on my Honda CRV.
I have a 1100 lb. burro trailer and just wonder these small compact suv to tow it with. Since you can’t get a manual transmission, I’d like to be able to put a transmission cooler in.

What is the max tow for the one you have? Some are rated to tow up to 2000#. If that's what you have and your trailer actually weighs 1100#, you won't need to screw around with add-ons.

I don’t know if the CX-5 can take an auxiliary ATF cooler, but you do have factory cooling within the radiator. You might start by setting up a transmission temperature monitor and see how it does in your towing conditions.

One caution with Mazdas in particular: tow ratings only include the driver and nothing else in the vehicle. I was surprised to see that in the fine print in the manual last time I checked- you might want to see if it still says that. Most manufacturers are now following the J2807 tow testing standards that allow for two front seat occupants. Even so, you should still be able to stay within your ratings with judicious packing.

A lot depends on how much mountain and high elevation towing you will do. You lose something like 3-4% for each 1000’ of elevation, so you’ll need additional margin if it’s something you do regularly.

It’s definitely a notch below the CR-V or CX-5 in driving dynamics, but the RAV4 is available with enhanced factory engine and transmission cooling to support a 3500# tow rating on the Adventure and TRD trims.

My wife has a 2018 RAV4 Limited AWD. The 2.5L is reliable and strong, and the chain-driven valve train eliminates expensive timing belt services. A shiftable transmission provides good control in the mountains. I’m considering an Adventure or TRD as the next tow vehicle for our 13’ Scamp.

is that burro 1100 lbs dry and empty, or is that 1100 lbs GWR ? noone tows an empty trailer when they are camping, at a minimum, they'll have water, food, clothing, bedding, towels, cooking gear, etc on board. I always base my towing decisions on GWR not 'curb weight'.

While the CX5 is a nice sporty SUV, it certainly would not be my choice to tow anything
