TV Tongue Jack Interference.
Hey All,
Gonna be towing our Scamp '13 with a 2015 Jeep Wrangler. Our previous TV had a rear hatch which opened up just clearing the tongue jack. The Wrangler back opens like a door hinged on the right. This interferes with the tongue jack. Need to lower the crank 6-8" to clear. Note that this is not the stock jack. Any ideas or solutions out there?
Thanks,
Dennis.

Some options to consider have been discussed in this thread:

See if any of those might suit your needs and budget.

Jon,
Thanks, there are more options than I thought there would be.
Dennis.

A rear door hinged on the right?
That must be a Jeep thing that I just don't get. What's the advantage? A door hinged at the top would clear the jack and, as a bonus, keep you shady or dry while loading. A door hinged on the side can't be fully opened in a tight curbside parking space, because it's so long. If it was hinged at the left, at least you could stand by the curb while loading. But a door hinged at the right forces you to approach it from the left, where traffic is passing by.
The only times I've noticed this design flaw were in Japanese market RHD cars that were carelessly adapted for the US market, such as older RAV 4s.

Can't do the top hinge due to soft top. Right side hinge keeps the tailgate open due to the crowned roads.

That makes some sense...
...if you assume that Wranglers are mostly used on unpaved and highly crowned roads. I don't know the numbers, but I definitely seem them driven on paved, flat roads in the city and suburbs. Keeping the door open on an adverse slope could more easily be accomplished by adding a catch, latch or spring to the door hinge, but might conflict with tradition.

I would get one of these from Harbor Freight, well actually I have one on our 4500 Trillium and it works great. You just pull the pin and it will swivel it out of the way and tow with it up. It is a bolt on.
There are several styles. I bought the one in the bottom link and put a longer axle bolt through it and add 2 more wheels I had so it doesn't sink in the sand or soft ground. The original tongue jack mount was welded on so I used it and the jack was held on with a large snap ring. Just had to remove that and switched the jacks. The original jack had a skid plate and I wanted wheels to make it easier to move and not have to lift it by hand to move it. It been on there 15+ years and 60,00 miles and never a problem.

I installed one of these a while back and it works great. Now I can open my tailgate when the trailer is hooked up without having to disconnect it from the tow.

Options...
Thanks again for posting options for the tongue jack. I particularly like the swivel jack with the extra wheels but don't think it will clear my battery box. The Jack-E-Up is probably the most original/inventive solution. I think the Ultimate jack will probably suite our situation best.

More photos more info.
Here are more photos of the jack in the raised folded up position and the clearance of my extra large battery box and with the propane tank mounted on that side also. If you think that 3 wheels is to wide, mine are 7" wide, Harbor Freight has a 2 wheel one also that you could buy and see if it would work and if not, just return it for a full refund. No, I don't work at HF but like some of there products and the money that they save me. Good luck on what every you decide to do.
