Booked site 3, arriving Wednesday 06 May. Looking forward to the rally. Most likely our first camping trip of the year.

Dave is there any particular cheese you favor ? We live only a short distance from the Alpha Dairy & Cheese Store , winner of numerous national and international awards in cheese making .
We would be more than happy to pick you up a pound of your favorite cheese
We understand how difficult it is to find real artisan cheese in Iowa

cheesy critique
Iowa Dave,
Lucky you. I will be bringing home the bacon...........and cheese to this event. My neighbor, Dewey, works at the local cheese factory. I've asked him to mix up a special batch for you.....fudge onion, garlic bacon Cheese whiz, a font of pressurized, canned, creamy, pseudo-substance. I'm told it goes very well sprayed on dill potato chips, and has done well in marketing focus tests.
bon appetite!

Might want to double check the shelter reservation? I was looking for a campsite, but the only thing it would offer for reserving was the shelter.
Almost thought of reserving it, and holding it for ransom for a campsite, lol.

Thanks. I have the shelter reservation printed out from when I made it last summer, but I'll doublecheck it online, too. I reserved the main shelter from Thursday through Saturday. (You can reserve a shelter much farther ahead than a campsite.)

Kevin,
The shelter is shown as reserved for all three days and. I’ve been monitoring the campsite reservations the past couple days. It looks like about 27 or so rally oriented reservations at this time. The site appears to be working well to me. When I reserved, I got an email receipt back in a matter of minutes. Four nights and an online charge of $4 for the reservation for a very reasonable total of $68.00. Let me know if you need anything as time goes on. Last year I had a couple tarps along that Corky used at the shelter on windy day. I can bring them again if you like. Thanks

May is a busy month for us but we booked site #14.
Jobs prevent us from being able to make it until Friday, but I'm sure there will still be some stories to hear and fun left to be had.

ROFLMAO - Just realized I was looking at the wrong "Pikes" park in Iowa. The humidity in Florida has rotted my brain.

Amazing what being in "Pikes PEAK" vs "Pikes POINT" will make. Site 29, arriving Wed. Looking forward to meeting new faces!

I just went online to the reservation site and the shelter is definitely booked for us on Thursday through Saturday night. We'll use it for our Friday night potluck and Saturday night wine/snacks get-together. Thursday night's usage is open right now for suggestions. Perhaps just a fire in the fireplace and a place to visit?
Also, there are only 7 electric sites open for booking right now. It appears that there are plenty other electric sites, but they are marked "Walk Up Only". Did anyone who attended last year have any trouble getting a site they liked as a walk-up? I wouldn't think it would be a problem, since it is early in the camping season.
Finally, for newcomers, please remember that this rally is at Pikes Peak State Park in McGregor, Iowa, not THE Pikes Peak in Colorado or Pikes Point (on West Lake Okoboji in north central Iowa). Don't want anyone going the wrong direction! Thanks, Glenn, for calling our attention to this easy-to-make mistake.

That is definitely confusing. I grew up in IA and never heard of Pike's Point State Park.

Dave, anything you brought last year would be appreciated. Right now, we have the morning coffee covered and everything reserved that can be. As Cindy noted a few weeks ago, we may have to be gone in the middle of the rally for her retirement party at her school, but we don't know for sure yet. If so, we would need a congenial host for Thursday evening until Saturday morning. Sounds like you if you are willing! We'll talk more as dates firm up.

The most desirable sites are the ones adjoining site #34 and they are usually the first to be reserved
There were numerous FG trailers / Rally attendees in the walk in sites last year if my memory serves me correctly

I hope it is warmer, and I can find mushrooms this year.
Things to do:
1. MacGregor is an artsy town of old buildings. Last year, though, to my disappointment, most open on Memorial Day weekend. MacGregor Historical Museum
Places to eat: Latinos Mexican Restaurant, Silver Dollar Saloon, Backwoods, Old Man River Restaurant and Brewery
2. Marquette (Where the Pink Elephant is) also an old river town with old buildings. Casino, Depot Museum, Eagles Landing Winery, Schoolhouse Antique Mall, Effigy Mounds National Monument. Spook Cave where you boat in a cave, Yellow River Forest.
(Continued)

3. Guttenburg has some neat old stores. It has the Lock and Dam on the Mississippi. It has a small, but neat aquarium. Places to eat: Lakeside Ballroom, Joe's Pizza, Fish Shack (former Diamond Joes when we lived in Elkader? Looks like it), and a few miles away: Osterdock Store Restaurant Bar (I think Kevin played piano and sang there when our son was a baby.)
4. Elkader - named after Algerian freedom fighter. Neat stores and buildings in town. Opera House here, not sure if there will be a play at this time, but we will ask. We lived here for 15 years and were involved in Opera House Players. Elkader built a white water spot on the Turkey River. You can put in at Elkader and canoe/kayak down to Motor Mill (We may do this. They have redone Motor Mill since we lived there. I will post a picture. It is breath-taking to turn a corner in the river, and there is the mill.) Check out the Keystone Bridge in Elkader. Places to eat: Shera's Algerian/American Restaurant and Bar, run by an Algerian who was involved in the Sister City group with Mascara and decided to move here; Johnson's Restaurant; Fennelly's Irish Pub; Elkader Pizzeria; Drew's Bar and Grill; and Treats on Bridge Street.

5. Decorah - Kevin grew up here. Another canoeing river, the Upper Iowa with beautiful bluffs; a long bike trail, Luther College (where Kevin and I went and I taught there.), neat stores downtown, the Norwegian-American Museum, the nest of the famous Decorah eagles at the Fish Hatchery, Dunnings Spring, Twin Springs, Ice Cave, Palisades Park. Phelp's Park, Pulpit Rock. Places to eat: Mabes Pizza, Ruby's Restaurant (best rolls you will ever have!), Old Armory BBQ, Don Jose Mexican Restaurant, Rubaiyat Restaurant, Koreana Japanese Restaurant. We can only recommend Mabe's and Ruby's as we don't get past those places.
6. Prairie Du Chien, WI - Villa Louis, Fort Crawford Museum, Fur Trade Museum, stores downtown. Places to eat: Acapulco Bar Grill, Jones Black Angus (We used to eat there frequently years ago.), Huckleberry's Restaurant, Eddie's Irish Pub, Fort Mulligan's Grill Pub, Frazier's Old Faithful Inn.
And of course, you can fish.
This should keep you busy.

Pikes
We will be glad to help any way we can. I’ll throw in some tarps and rope. Since many people are looking for an activity that’s specific to their interests, it’s sometimes difficult to list something for everybody but that’s not to say it doesn’t exist. My gregarious nature ( some call it Attention Deficit) has allowed me
to experience most of the outdoor activities available in that part of the world. The 19.1 mile Prairie Farmer
Trail from Calmar to Cresco is all paved and a mild 2 to 3 percent grade throughout. The Bily Brothers clock
Museum at Spillville and the meat market at Protovin are only a few miles apart. The Motor Mill Cindy mentioned is another glimpse into the past.
Have you ever caught a Redhorse? They’re a sucker type fish and at nearby Elkader, the annual Redhorse
Derby will be going on the Saturday of the rally. Cash Prizes and more bib overalls than you might see in the rest of your life. Scale them, grind them , bones and all, add the ingredients needed include some small bits of hot pepper and roll up and drop into hot oil. Botta Boom Botta Bing you have Deep Fried Jalapeño Sucker Balls. Trout stocking will be in full swing on area creeks by the first week in May. The Iowa DNR publishes the stocking schedule on their website. Here’s a couple Pheasant Back Mushrooms I cut off
off of a River Willow trunk last spring and a young camper from Wisconsin trying his luck on nearby Sny McGill. creek.

Additional attractions
These are a bit of a drive (40 minutes or more) but interesting places to visit in the Pikes Peak locale. I'm fixin' on hitting both of them. Tried the meat market last year, but it was closed on Sunday. Very impressive meat selections.
The Driftless center is new, big, beautiful and full of local history, displays and artifacts. A well done center.

Hi Tom
I stopped into the center last winter and talked to the Director for a few minutes. She said they would be happy to put on a little talk about the driftless area for us if we wanted to get a group together and we could also go out on the deck and use binoculars or spotting scopes if there was waterfowl on the marsh. The locker in Spillville closed but Polashek’s in Protivin is going good. The locker in Edgewood is pretty good too.
Went for a little drive yesterday and saw a pair of Harriers in a tree and a Red Fox trotting across a pasture. Also several bald eagles. They are just getting on the nest now or Bringing in some remodeling sticks down here in our country.
